The Surface Pro design retains some advantages. For many, the inclusion of a USB-C and an older USB Type-A port represents an ideal compromise, even if we'd have preferred Thunderbolt. The kickstand is overlooked as an absolute necessity for desk work. Even the chunky bezels make the tablet easier to tote from room to room while playing Spotify or Netflix.

There are circumstances where the near-unique nature of the Surface Pro 7 means that it really is the best creative device on the market. If you’re a creative director running between client meetings and need a combination of a digital Moleskine and a way to keep your admin and email under control. If you want the thinnest, lightest device you can run the full version of Photoshop or Illustrator or XD on, it’s a no-brainer. Artists looking for the best drawing and painting experience are still better off with an iPad Pro and Procreate – but if you need to create vector art as well, then Illustrator on the Surface Pro covers both bases much better (sorry Affinity Publisher).

The Pro 7 is multipurpose. It might not do anything the best - cheaper laptops can comfortably outpace it in terms of raw performance - but it does just about everything pretty well. If you’re looking for a flexible tablet for work or pleasure, the Surface Pro 7 is definitely worth a look.

Despite all this, though, the latest Surface Pro is still an outstanding device. Performance is more than adequate, it's got the most attractive form-factor going, and it's the best showcase for the power of Windows 10. Overall, this is an expected upgrade but one Surface Laptop fans will appreciate. One of the best Windows 10 alternatives to the MacBook Air and Pro 13, though the likes of the Dell XPS 13 also do a good job at filling that spot. The Surface Laptop 3 15 is a proper MacBook Pro rival and a top addition to the Surface family; a few more ports and an SD card reader would have been ideal though, mind you, not in keeping with the clean aesthetic Microsft is going for.

The Surface Pro 7 isn't the most exciting upgrade, but if the Surface Pro X's $999 starting price is too steep, this 2-in-1 should satisfy at $799. You get faster performance, dual far-field mics and a USB-C port in the same overall package. I just wish Microsoft trimmed the bezels and offered the same pen garage as the Surface Pro X's keyboard.

In many ways, the Surface Pro 7 feels like an indication that Microsoft has reached the limits of what it can do with the traditional Surface Pro design.
