The Dell Precision 5520 is a capable work machine and can offer a stylish alternative to OS X or Windows 10 workstations. When a manufacturer provides drivers (either backported from a newer kernel or supplied for the PC in question), the seamless experience makes you want to lean back and enjoy the OS. Frankly, I wish more PC makers would do what Dell did and offer their hardware to consumers, prepared and equipped for a Linux experience.

The Precision 5530 is, in many ways, what the Precision 5520 should have been. While the updated machine still struggles with thermal throttling, CPU stability and performance are improved. The GPU has also been upgraded without much sacrifice to heat output. The overall experience is much better.

Its 17-inch display is captivating, endlessly immersive, and just a joy to work on. The 5760 is sleek and doesn’t feel at all like it weighs 5.5 pounds. From its 0.34 inches thick, tactile deck to its massive clicky keyboard and touchpad and 8-plus hours of battery life, I could offer endless platitudes for the Precision, but I digress. I will add that within its test group it is the most affordable workstation, starting at just $2,059, and should you be in the market for a workstation, the Dell Precision 5760 is an excellent option.

Now that we’ve seen what the Precision 17 5770 is all about, it’s time to summarize all the information and try to help you make a purchase decision. Before we start, you have to know that this laptop is fairly expensive. We also have to mention the battery life. Yes, the display is small, but the hardware is pretty power-hungry. This makes it tough for the battery, but thankfully, here you get a 72Wh unit. It lasts for 10 hours and 30 minutes of either Web browsing, or video playback. So if you don’t have anything intensive to work on, it will definitely last you an entire workday. Unfortunately, the memory is soldered to the motherboard. Not that we expected anything else – after all, this is one of the most portable workstations on the market. On the bright side, you can configure it with 64GB of LPDDR5 RAM out of the factory. Another seeming bummer situation is revolving around the port selection. You get four Thunderbolt 4 connectors and a MicroSD card slot. This means no USB Type-As or HDMI on there. However, Dell provides a USB Type-C to Type-A and HDMI dongle inside the box. After all, the XPS-like visuals, the fantastic build quality, and the comfort of use make the laptop a good purchase. It is a great little machine for people working with not-so-complex 3D manipulation, photography, and videography. If the high price is not too offputting for you, the laptop is really worth it. Unfortunately, the memory is soldered to the motherboard. Not that we expected anything else – after all, this is one of the most portable workstations on the market. On the bright side, you can configure it with 64GB of LPDDR5 RAM out of the factory. Another seeming bummer situation is revolving around the port selection. You get four Thunderbolt 4 connectors and a MicroSD card slot. This means no USB Type-As or HDMI on there. However, Dell provides a USB Type-C to Type-A and HDMI dongle inside the box. After all, the XPS-like visuals, the fantastic build quality, and the comfort of use make the laptop a good purchase. It is a great little machine for people working with not-so-complex 3D manipulation, photography, and videography. If the high price is not too offputting for you, the laptop is really worth it. Again, that is if you are in the right niche and if you’ve decided to skip the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Dell Precision 5680 review: This beefy workstation is surprisingly easy to carry

I like using the Dell Precision 5680 because it feels like a slightly bigger, beefier version of the elegant, streamlined laptops I've come to expect from Dell. With its easy-to-carry frame, big screen and strong performance it's probably the closest thing I've yet seen to an OLED-equipped Dell XPS 17, and it will be for the foreseeable future—or at least, until Dell decides to sell an XPS 17 OLED. But as much as I like the Precision 5680, it's hard to see a lot of cases where I'd recommend it to someone over another laptop. It can't last as long on battery or perform as well (at least in basic benchmarks) as Apple's MacBook Pros, it can't run games as well as the best gaming laptops, and its performance relative to other 16-inch 4K workstations we've tested this year is mixed.
