EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 is a well-built, capable flagship that gets most things right. The compact design, great display, impressive cameras, and excellent battery life make a convincing case for it. But at Rs 89,999, the limited telephoto reach and the minor software rough edges are harder to overlook when the competition is this capable. If a compact form factor and Leica-tuned cameras are high on your priority list, the Xiaomi 17 is worth every rupee. For everyone else, the rivals mentioned above are worth serious consideration before you decide.

EN→zh-CNXiaomi's 17, despite some downgrades, remains an easy recommendation for someone looking for something better or different than the typical camera setup under Rs. 90,000 in India. Leica-branded cameras aside, the Xiaomi 17 is a solid device with the best chipset available, an excellent display and good battery life in a compact form factor. It should be the one to reach for if you are serious about photography or video recording, as it offers more mature image processing than what Vivo's X300 and Oppo's Find X9 offer. However, given that these competing smartphones have nearly as good hardware for less, your decision to pick the Xiaomi 17 will mainly boil down to its Leica imaging, video recording capabilities, processing power and your budget. If you seek even better battery life from a compact device, the Oppo Find X9 should be an easy pick, with its higher-capacity 7,025mAh battery at a lower price of Rs. 74,999. You will get an impressive set of cameras with the Find X9, but video recordings won't be as impressive as on the Xiaomi 17.Vivo's X300 is another sharpshooter at this price point, offering far better ultrawide camera performance than the Xiaomi 17.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 gets a lot right by knowing exactly what it wants to be. Instead of chasing gimmicks or trying to outdo its siblings with louder hardware, it focuses on delivering a compact flagship experience that still feels complete. The understated design, comfortable in-hand feel, strong display, capable Leica camera system, and unusually large battery all come together in a package that feels thoughtfully balanced rather than compromised. It is not perfect. The haptics can feel a little too aggressive, and at €999, it is clearly a premium purchase rather than an easy impulse buy. Still, the Xiaomi 17 makes a convincing case for itself by offering top-tier performance, long software support, and excellent battery life in a size that is becoming increasingly rare. For anyone who wants a flagship Android phone without moving up to a much larger Pro, Max, or Ultra device, the Xiaomi 17 is one of the most appealing options in its class.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 is a capable flagship that gets a lot of the fundamentals right. You get strong performance, a bright and smooth display, excellent battery life, and a camera system that offers something genuinely different. If you specifically want a compact flagship with strong battery life and you like the idea of Leica-style photography, the Xiaomi 17 makes sense. But if you’re looking for a more balanced, universally appealing flagship experience, there are alternatives in this price range that feel more complete.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 is a phone that knows what it wants to be. Compact, capable, and camera-forward, it delivers on all three in a way that is hard to fault for the most part. The Leica colour science helps it stand out from its rivals, the battery and performance hold up well in daily use, and the thermal improvements over the Chinese variant are a good step forward, making the Indian unit a better overall package. Where it falls short is also pretty clear. The ultrawide is the weakest lens in the system, the 2.6x telephoto zoom leaves you wanting more reach, and the software needs a bit more polish before it feels truly flagship-grade. None of these is a dealbreaker on its own, but at Rs 89,999, the phone needs to be held to a higher standard.

EN→zh-CNAt S$1,149 (S$1,099 during current promotion), the Xiaomi 17 is a slightly cheaper but more than capable alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S26 (S$1,438). Both are similarly compact 6.3-inch flagship phones, but some may prefer the Xiaomi's Qualcomm chipset over the Samsung Exynos in the S26. The Xiaomi 17 also has the advantage in battery capacity, charging, and most likely the cameras, too, though we have yet to test the S26's cameras properly. In short, the Xiaomi 17 does everything right, except for running warm sometimes. Get it now at Shopee and Lazada.

Reviewing the Xiaomi 17 (global model), the best smartphone for fans of mini handsets in 2026 with its impressive battery tech, flexible Leica camera and premium specs. Sure, the Xiaomi 17 global edition isn't perfect, with some unfortunate gaming side-effects. But I really enjoyed my time testing this compact phone, which is a serious Samsung Galaxy S26 rival. First up, you've got that beefy Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in charge. Gamers can play intensive titles like Wuthering Waves on the Xiaomi 17, same as the Samsung S26. However, this smartphone does get quite toasty, to worrying degrees. That Leica camera setup is a banger as always, with fresh hardware for this 2026 model (unlike the Galaxy S26). You can capture great-looking night shots and portraits, with a decent telephoto shooter attached. The Xiaomi 17 is also decent for recording video, if you want a mini vlogging device.

EN→zh-CNA week with the Xiaomi 17 provides a clear answer to the question posed at the start of this review: is it worth the price? Yes, it is. However, the value depends on understanding what you expect from a smartphone. If you are looking for a compact flagship that is comfortable to use one-handed, offers around two days of battery life, performs well in most photography scenarios, and features one of the better displays in its class, the Xiaomi 17 presents a strong option. There are some minor drawbacks: ads appear in the system interface, low-light video quality is not exceptional, and the camera module tends to attract fingerprints and dust. How significant these issues are will depend on the user. For me personally, as someone who has generally been hesitant about this brand, the Xiaomi 17 was the first model that made me consider purchasing a Xiaomi device. That, perhaps, is the most objective assessment I can provide.

EN→zh-CNSo, should you buy the Xiaomi 17? Is this a good phone? Well, it’s one of those rare small flagship phones. I personally love this type of small flagships. The price, in itself, is quite good. There is a tiny price hike over the previous generation but it’s not as egregious as other brands. Plus, we’re in the middle of a DRAM crisis now and for it to only increase a tiny bit is already a boon.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 is a great compact flagship phone, offering good design, a lovely display, plenty of power and considerable battery life. It's the stamina of this phone that makes it stand out compared to big-name rivals like Samsung's Galaxy S26, while the fast charging is also to its credit. The camera experience is good, with a comprehensive set of lenses and good performance in most shooting conditions. The downside of this phone comes from the software experience, which takes plenty of work to wrestle it away from Xiaomi and start feeling like it's working for you. There's clear competition from Samsung and Google in this 6.3-inch flagship space, but the Xiaomi isn't as leftfield as you might think – and on account of all the positives above, plus a competitve price point, it's well worth considering.

EN→zh-CNAfter using the Xiaomi 17, what can be said is that for a compact phone, it doesn't really feel like a downgrade when switching from a daily driver like the iPhone 17 Pro. The only real compromises are the weak ultra-wide camera and maybe the slightly less versatile zoom range. Other than that, this year's Xiaomi 17 is an almost perfect all-rounder compact phone with no major flaws.

EN→zh-CNXiaomi 17 is a versatile and fairly compact flagship, “for every day”, which not only meets all the basic requirements for this class of smartphones, but also has several nice bonuses. The smartphone has a great screen, a top-notch processor, a nice design, protection against dirt and water, high-quality stereo sound, as well as good main and telephoto cameras. To this, it is worth adding an exceptional battery life and fast charging. But it also had its weaknesses. The smartphone heats up significantly and loses performance during prolonged loads. The ultra-wide-angle camera could be more interesting, considering the price. And the shell, as before, displays advertising in some places.

EN→zh-CNOverall, the Xiaomi 17 offers a true compact flagship experience, delivers good camera results, enjoyable entertainment, and great gaming performance. EN→zh-CNIn a world where bigger is often better, the Xiaomi 17 proves that compact can still pack a serious punch. From its sleek and durable build to that gorgeous screen, and top-tier Leica cameras, everything feels premium and well thought out. The Leica cameras are easily one of its strongest suits, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 deliver more than enough power for daily use, productivity, and gaming. We have no major complaints except the pre-installed bloatware apps and the less improved battery life despite a larger capacity. But for the most part, the Xiaomi 17 is shaping up to be solid option in the flagship space.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 is not difficult to recommend if it’s in your price range and if you’re looking for a compact smartphone. This is, without a doubt, one of the best compact smartphones on the market now. It has Qualcomm’s new, most powerful chip, along with a very capable camera setup, great battery life, and a very solid display. The performance is also up to par, while charging is plenty fast. EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 is a well-rounded compact flagship. It combines strong performance, reliable cameras, long battery life and very fast charging in a relatively small chassis. None of its individual features are radically new, but together they create a cohesive and impressive device. Its main drawbacks are ergonomic rather than technical. The narrower display may not suit users accustomed to larger phones, and HyperOS, while feature-rich, may require adjustment for those who prefer a cleaner Android experience. So, in the end, if you’re looking for flagship specifications in a smaller form factor, the Xiaomi 17 is a very solid option. It does not redefine the category, but it executes the fundamentals impressively well.

EN→zh-CNIf you’re after a compact flagship-level phone, there’s little that offers the same degree of bang for your buck right now. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 offers a more elegant user experience and longer software support, but falls down on battery and charging performance. It’s a similar story with the iPhone 17 Pro, which delivers superior video capture and cleaner, longer-lasting software, but otherwise falls short of the raw performance and breadth of features Xiaomi has squeezed into this phone.

EN→zh-CNXiaomi took a risk in waiting so long to bring the Xiaomi 17 to a more global audience. Had it turned up a few months earlier, it would’ve wiped the floor with the Galaxy S25 on account of its massive battery, more powerful chipset and very proficient rear cameras. Instead, it arrives after the Galaxy S26 made its debut. The performance gap has now closed. Photography may be too close to call, depending on how much (or little) you care about analogue-inspired image processing. And Samsung’s software ecosystem has a stronger foothold here in the West.

Last year, the Xiaomi 17 Series gets released in China with three new models including the base Xiaomi, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. And if you’re wondering what happened to the Xiaomi 16 Series? Well, they skipped it entirely and jumped straight to 17. It wasn't entirely clear what was the reason behind the jump, but most of us think it was just about Xiaomi keeping up with Apple's iPhone 17 Series. Setting that thought aside, the more important question is how does the Xiaomi 17 keep up with our daily use?

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 is a wonderfully powerful and refined compact smartphone. Performance and battery life are excellent, the cameras perform well across all lenses and the display is sharp, bright and colour-accurate. From a hardware perspective, I can confidently say that you will not be disappointed if you choose the Xiaomi 17. The unsaid implication there, of course, is that the software is a different story. I find Xiaomi’s software frustratingly obnoxious, so intent on imitating Apple that it fails to keep up with the rest of the Android crowd. The Samsung Galaxy S26 may end up not matching the Xiaomi 17 in performance and battery life, but its superior software (along with its sleeker and lighter build) are likely to make it a more appealing compact phone overall. With Samsung bringing this kind of ammunition to the fight, Xiaomi would do well to spend a little less time trying to be Apple and a little more time figuring out how to compete with rivals inside the Android stable.

EN→zh-CNOn one hand, the Xiaomi 17 doesn’t feel like a massive generational leap over the Xiaomi 15, and for that reason, I can’t imagine existing owners rushing to upgrade. On the other hand, it’s a great all-rounder, and if you’re looking for a flagship in a more compact chassis, few come close to this. It has a significantly bigger battery and faster charging than either the iPhone 17 or Galaxy S26, and in my opinion, better cameras, too. Software is a matter of personal preference, but HyperOS is super customisable, so if there’s anything you’re not keen on, you can likely change it. What Xiaomi can’t quite match is the software support terms. So if you’re planning to hold onto your phone for a long time, that could play into your decision. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Xiaomi 17; it has been great for gaming, content consumption, and photography alike. It’s an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a smaller flagship phone in 2026.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 is one excellent compact flagship phone that I definitely enjoyed using. It successfully combines a compact size with a no-compromise performance and also delivers truly impressive battery life. The camera, while not mind-blowing in any way, is still more than capable for 90% of most people's needs. Pound-for-pound, the Xiaomi 17 beats its main rivals, like the iPhone 17, the Pixel 10 Pro, and will most likely beat the Galaxy S26, too, especially in terms of value. The only major downsides here are the on-board software, which is far from the best one out there, and the limited availability. Sure, you can get it easily from many of the online outlets that resell Chinese phones in the West, but this way you won't be able to benefit from any promotions and discounts. And as we know, this is what most people buying an iPhone, a Pixel, or a Galaxy from a US carrier benefit from. So the playing field is uneven from the get-go. Disregarding that, however, the Xiaomi 17 is an excellent phone that impressively beats most of its rivals.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 looks to be a promising compact flagship, especially if you value design, multimedia usage, and battery life. The 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED display, excellent stereo speakers, and handy one-handed form factor make it a great everyday device for content consumption and general use. The 7,000mAh battery is another impressive aspect with excellent endurance in testing and real-world use while still keeping the phone relatively slim and light for its class. There are, however, some trade-offs to keep in mind. The phone gets warm from time to time and runs hot under sustained gaming and heavy camera use, which leads to throttling and occasional lag in more demanding titles. Camera performance is decent and versatile with the triple 50MP setup, but it isn’t a key highlight.

The phone also comes with an IP68 rating, making it resistant to dust and water for up to 30 minutes underwater. At just 191 grams and 8.1mm thick, it feels surprisingly light and compact for its class. The display is one of the biggest highlights of this device. Xiaomi has equipped the 17 with a 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED screen that supports 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and a stunning 3500 nits peak brightness — one of the brightest in any smartphone today.

EN→zh-CNEven in its China-only form, the Xiaomi 17 Pro looks like a promising 2026 flagship. The secondary display, which is more purposeful than most attempts we’ve seen in recent years, brings a fresh look and enhances the smartphone’s usability. Moreover, the compact build feels genuinely premium, and the performance and battery efficiency suggest a flagship ready to compete at the highest level once global optimisation is in place. The cameras, while capable, still need fine-tuning to match the best in every scenario, and region-based restrictions currently limit some of the phone’s most interesting software features. If Xiaomi can refine the global software experience and unlock the full potential of the secondary display and accessories, the 17 Pro could easily become one of the most compelling flagships. It may even be worth holding out for, should the brand decide to launch it in India.

EN→zh-CNXiaomi's all-new 17 series made its China debut a few weeks ago, and the series, comprising three models - Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max - is expected to make its India debut in early 2026. While the India launch could be weeks or months away, Xiaomi India sent out China models of the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Pro for a limited period to Gadgets 360 for a quick first look. Here's why we believe this will be the company's biggest launch in recent years. To start with, all three models in the Xiaomi 17 series pack Qualcomm's top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform. With three models, Xiaomi caters to users seeking different screen sizes, ranging from 6.3 inches to 6.9 inches. What are the key things to watch out for in the upcoming Xiaomi 17 series? EN→zh-CNLaunched on September 25, 2025, the Xiaomi 17 Pro is a true flagship that blends luxury, power, and innovation. It’s built with a glass front protected by Xiaomi’s Dragon Crystal Glass and an aluminum frame, giving it a sleek yet durable feel. Weighing 192 grams and measuring just 8mm thick, it feels comfortable in the hand while maintaining a premium design. The phone also carries an IP68 rating, meaning it can survive up to 30 minutes underwater at 4 meters depth — a big plus for durability. The 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED display is nothing short of stunning. It supports 68 billion colors, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HDR Vivid, with a blazing peak brightness of 3500 nits, making it easily viewable even in bright sunlight.

EN→zh-CNAs we wrap up this review, the big question is: what do you think of Xiaomi’s first compact Pro model? By breaking away from the tradition of reserving the “Pro” badge for large-screen devices, the Xiaomi 17 Pro brings a refreshing surprise to those who have long awaited a true small-screen flagship. At just 6.3 inches, it condenses the essence of a large-screen flagship into a compact form, delivering uncompromised flagship performance in a smaller body. The display features a 6.3-inch “golden size” panel with 1.5K resolution, 460 PPI pixel density, a slim weight of 192g, and the latest M10 luminous material for sharper, richer visuals. On the photography side, the Xiaomi 17 Pro doesn’t cut corners.

EN→zh-CNWhen someone recently asked me why I don’t take my own photographs, I didn’t have an answer. Honestly, I just don’t know. I am not an actor, nor do I wish to be an influencer who enjoys being in front of the camera. I would rather be behind the camera, capturing everyday moments that I love to do. It’s one of the perks of being a tech journalist: travelling the world, meeting new people, and experiencing different cultures. And, most importantly, testing new gear ahead of anyone else. I hear it…those who keep pushing me to be on Instagram but it’s not going to happen, ever. Still, I promise you this: I would love to show how I see the world through my lens in private whenever you are around over a cup of coffee. I have over 2TB of photos that I have captured on my phone over the years.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a camera phone. Xiaomi will tell you that, the Leica branding on the back will tell you that, and the large circular camera module that dominates the rear will tell you that before you’ve even turned it on. And after spending considerable time with the phone — including a week in Vietnam shooting over 500 photos — I’ll tell you that too. The cameras are as good as advertised. But here’s the thing nobody is really talking about. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has another trick up its sleeve, one that doesn’t come with a Leica badge or a catchy acronym. It has one of the best batteries I’ve used on a flagship phone in recent memory.

EN→zh-CNFor the most part, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a phone that impresses. The pricing is higher this time, but it's totally understandable given the RAM price hikes! There have been improvements in many areas — it's more refined, more mature, and getting closer to being a truly balanced flagship. But is it the most balanced flagship out there? Not yet. Something like Samsung still feels slightly more polished overall, and the software is still the bottleneck. Xiaomi could improve further by adding more meaningful AI features, refining animations, and improving battery optimization. But when it comes to the camera experience, it's just so good. Going out on a weekend for a photo walk, shooting black-and-white portraits, capturing nature, chasing light — this is that phone. The camera experience feels serene. Pure. That Leica tuning, that dramatic black and white, that 1-inch sensor depth — it feels intentional.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra is one of the most capable flagship phones of 2026, but it’s not without its trade-offs. Buying it largely comes down to two things: whether the cameras justify the price, and whether you can live with a phone that is big, heavy, and expensive in a market full of strong alternatives. For most photography enthusiasts and power users, the answer is likely yes. For everyone else, it’s worth thinking through. If you want a deep dive into the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, you can check out my review here. If you’re pressed for time, here’s a quick breakdown of why you should buy and skip the phone.

EN→zh-CNSome people might nitpick at Xiaomi’s decision to charge an extra S$100 for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, but we think it’s a reasonable ask when considering the amount of upgrades in this phone. Additionally, Xiaomi has managed to keep prices the same over the last two years. If you really can’t bear to fork out that extra S$100, all you have to do is take advantage of the early bird discount to pay S$1,699. Whether it’s the new and more refined HyperOS 3, the improved Leica-branded cameras or the excellent hardware inside, Xiaomi has continued to do a lot of things right. But this year, there are even more competitors to fight against. While the Xiaomi 17 Ultra continues to compete against the Honor Magic8 Pro, the Honor phone is still S$300 more affordable while sporting the same processor, a larger battery and faster charging speeds. On the plus side for Xiaomi, the 17 Ultra has the Magic8 Pro beat when it comes to detail retention in both telephoto and low-light shots.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra makes its priorities clear from the moment you pick it up, and it delivers on them convincingly. The 1-inch main sensor, the continuous zoom telephoto, and LOFIC technology combine to produce a camera system that is among the best available on a smartphone right now — and arguably the best for users who want their photos to look like the moments they captured rather than AI-generated interpretations of them. Beyond the cameras, the upgrades are meaningful across the board.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a remarkable piece of hardware that raises the bar in almost every area that matters. The camera system is class-leading, the display is stunning, and the performance is flawless. Having come from a year with the 15 Ultra, I expected to be impressed but not by this much, and yet here we are. The upgrades across camera, display, and battery life are substantial enough to make this feel like a true generational leap rather than a minor refresh. On a personal note. the flat display is a design choice I respect but don’t fully prefer, particularly for extended handheld use where the 15 Ultra’s curved ergonomics had a natural advantage. These are, however, fixable or adaptable issues. The hardware underneath is outstanding.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra made me hate AI photos. I wasn’t a big fan of tweaking my photos using AI editing tools in the first place. There is a sense of personality in capturing imperfect photos. I am, after all, an incredibly average photographer! I know my photos aren’t artistic, and I’m quite happy with that. I don’t need an AI object eraser to remove people or objects, or (more recently) type and describe how I want my photo to look, and let AI do its thing. A lot of phones now offer several AI tools to help you create that “perfect” photo. So, imagine my surprise when Xiaomi said they don’t want to rely heavily on AI camera features, but rather deliver on true camera hardware to help capture perfect photos. After using the Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s cameras this week on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island, capturing over 500 photos, I can safely say I agree with their vision.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra feels, at times, like using a camera that happens to be an Android phone. Those who value what large sensors and Leica-approved optics can do are going to be in photography heaven here. On the flip side, however, there's the consideration of the noisy "rattle" from that new camera system when it's not active, the huge camera enclosure to the rear, and the simple fact that a 75-100mm mechanical zoom is only a marginal gain. Overall, though, photo aficionados will love the Xiaomi 17 Ultra for its unique features and image quality results. It's niche, but it's nifty.

This is the Xiaomi 17 Ultra review after two months* -- okay, okay, the two months isn't exactly accurate, because I tested the China Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica for a month and half, and then this global version of the standard Ultra for two weeks. But still, other than some superficial changes, the camera system of both models of the Ultra I tested are nearly identical, so hence I said I have been using it for two months. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and features a top-tier camera system headlined by a 1-inch sensor main camera and a Periscope zoom with variable aperture between 75mm and 100mm.

While it doesn't pack a telephoto extender like the Vivo X300 for even more zoom, I'd argue that the current range in the 17 Ultra is more than enough, especially for street photography.

EN→zh-CNXiaomi 17 Ultra review: Fantastic cameras As the latest in a line of great camera phones, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra has a lot to live up to. But the good news is this phone delivers, and in spades. Featuring a new 1-inch sensor with LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacity) technology and a 200MP periscope 75-100mm zoom lens with mechanical optical zoom, this camera phone is one of the best available (until next year, I guess). EN→zh-CNI have my problems with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra – the software is still among my least favourites, the camera module is too chunky and the lower screen resolution and cheap feeling of the fiberglass rear don’t befit a phone of this price. Whether you’re looking for high-end gaming performance, a superb screen and speakers, solid battery life and speedy charging, or an incredible camera system, the 17 Ultra has you covered. It’s really those who are into photography and videomaking that will enjoy this phone the most, though. The camera system is truly excellent, and at times, this feels more like a camera than a phone.Of course, no product is perfect, and there are a few areas where Xiaomi is bested by the competition. For instance, both the Oppo Find X9 Pro and Honor Magic 8 Pro have better battery life (in my experience), and they’re better for macro photography, too. But does that mean they’re better choices? Not necessarily. Xiaomi’s image processing and filter selection mean I often prefer the shots from the 17 Ultra, and it has plenty to offer elsewhere, too. The performance, the display, and the battery life are all excellent. If any of these are of great importance to you, then the Xiaomi 17 Ultra won't disappoint. The camera package is excellent and truly something to behold, giving you exceptional quality and versatility. The only problem? Well, the only issue is last year's Xiaomi 15 Ultra, which was a bit more consistent even though it lacked a vario periscope. If you haven't used the Xiaomi 15 Ultra or even the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, however, you'd be none the wiser. Another downside is the software, which feels like something out of 2020 for all the wrong reasons.

While Chinese lens designs are fairly common in North America, we are largely ignorant of the mobile phone options, as they are so rarely available. Xiaomi is a huge tech company making everything from home electronics and appliances to EV vehicles, and of course, smartphones. It recently announced a flagship phone called the 17 Ultra that is now being released internationally, and they invited Jaron Schneider and me to get a hands-on experience with it in inland China.

EN→zh-CNWith such gloriously uncompromising hardware, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s camera prowess was never really in doubt. It sets the standard for telephoto clarity, steps up its selfie game, and that lead lens remains a shortcut to bokeh brilliance. The film-like image processing and a selection of official accessories also help it stand out from less characterful rivals. You’re also getting flagship-grade performance, rapid charging speeds and a screen that’s simply gorgeous. It’s undeniably expensive, though. The more mainstream design and a battery that’s not quite class-leading also mean it’s perhaps not quite as special as earlier efforts were, though Leica lovers probably won’t mind too much.

Reviewing the Xiaomi 17 Ultra (global model), boasting one of the best smartphone cameras and some serious specs. But is the Xiaomi 17 Ultra a serious rival to the OPPO Find X9 Pro, Vivo X300 Pro etc? I've been testing for a couple of weeks now so here's my verdict.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra makes one thing very clear: this is a camera-first flagship in every sense. From the 1-inch primary sensor to the new continuous optical zoom telephoto system, the phone is engineered around photography rather than just adding impressive specs for the sake of it. In both daylight and low light, it consistently delivers results that are among the best I’ve seen on a smartphone so far this year. Beyond the cameras, the upgrades are meaningful. A larger 6.9-inch flat display, a massive 6,800mAh battery without added bulk, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset all make this a serious flagship package. The only caveat is that this Chinese unit has certain software limitations, so it’s hard to judge the full experience until the global version arrives.

EN→zh-CNWe put the Xiaomi 17 Ultra through our rigorous DXOMARK Camera test suite to measure its performance in photo, video, and zoom quality from an end-user perspective. This article breaks down how the device fared in a variety of tests and several common use cases and is intended to highlight the most important results of our testing with an extract of the captured data. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra delivers an excellent performance in the DXOMARK Camera tests. In many test areas it is a significant upgrade over its predecessor 15 Ultra and is getting close to the very best flagship devices on the market – without quite matching them, however. Photo performance is particularly impressive.

EN→zh-CNDespite the hefty price tag, which is even higher than last year, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is one of the best flagship cameraphones you can get right now. Just like the rest of the flagship phones, the 17 Ultra has an excellent display, fast chipset, snappy charging and long battery life, although that last bit isn't a given. However, the improved telephoto and selfie cameras, along with the exceptional main camera performance, make the device one of the best in its class. We also didn't feel the absence of the second 3x telephoto camera either, as the current 200MP telephoto shooter with continuous optical zoom and close-distance focusing covers all bases.

Xiaomi really caught everyone off guard by dropping the Xiaomi 17 Ultra months ahead of schedule. Usually, we have to wait until spring for the "Ultra" flagship, but it's already here to kick off 2026 with some massive changes. The design has seen a complete overhaul. The curved screen is gone, replaced by a fully flat display that feels much more like the Pro Max. It’s significantly better for gaming and applying screen protectors, even if the flat back feels a bit sharper in the hand compared to the older 15 Ultra. But the real controversy is the camera system.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Ultra was announced on December 25, 2025, and released just two days later, positioning itself firmly in the ultra-premium flagship segment. It comes in two versions, including a Leica Edition with a mechanical zoom ring, which immediately sets it apart for camera enthusiasts. The phone feels solid and premium with its glass front, aluminum frame, and fiber-reinforced plastic or eco-leather back. At 230 grams and 8.5 mm thickness, it is heavy but well-balanced.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has finally landed, and it’s doing something we haven't seen from an "Ultra" phone in years—it actually went on a diet. After generations of massive, heavy camera bricks, Xiaomi managed to pack a ridiculously powerful imaging system into a chassis that’s only 8.29mm thick. But the real story here isn't just the improved ergonomics; it's the brand-new 200MP variable telephoto lens that changes how we shoot portraits..

EN→zh-CNWith the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, Xiaomi makes its ambition to rival the iPhone 17 Pro Max clear not only in name, but also in imaging performance. This strategy largely succeeds in Photo, where the device scores just one point below Apple’s flagship. The slight deficit is mainly due to zoom limitations, stemming from the ultra-wide camera’s constrained 17mm focal length, which reduces flexibility at shorter zoom ranges. That said, the Xiaomi’s primary camera slightly outperforms the iPhone’s, delivering consistently accurate exposure, pleasing color rendering, and an excellent texture/noise trade-off. Noise is particularly well controlled, often surpassing Apple’s performance in challenging scenes.

The battle for the ultimate Android flagship just got incredibly intense. We’ve got the heavy hitters—Honor Magic 8 Pro, Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, Oppo Find X9 Pro, and Vivo X300 Pro—all dropping at the same time. After using these four phones extensively for the last month, the results were honestly surprising. One device has completely raised the bar, while another popular choice felt like it was lagging behind on key hardware. If you’re thinking about upgrading and want to know which phone actually delivers the best daily experience without the marketing hype, this comparison covers everything from grip comfort to extreme gaming stress tests.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is Xiaomi’s boldest flagship yet, featuring a striking design with a functional rear OLED display, a gorgeous 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED panel, and the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip for top-tier performance. Its massive 7,500mAh battery delivers class-leading endurance, easily outlasting most rivals. However, despite the Leica branding, the camera system still feels unrefined — with inconsistent color tuning, a weak ultrawide lens, and underwhelming video output. HyperOS 3.0 also continues to lag behind competitors in polish and consistency. Overall, the 17 Pro Max is innovative and powerful but still lacks the finesse needed to truly challenge Samsung, Apple, or even Vivo at the very top.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is a well-rounded flagship phone without many weak points, if at all. It has the latest and greatest chipset, a high-end display, an excellent build, a huge battery, snappy charging, amazing speakers and dependable camera hardware. The secondary display is a nice touch, as it makes the Pro Max stand out, but, most importantly, it makes the selfie-taking experience with the rear cameras so much more flexible. Despite being so well-rounded, however, it's hard to recommend the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max if you are looking for an amazing camera phone. The cameras here seem good to the average Joe, but there are objectively better alternatives with more capable hardware right now, and the telephoto camera is a miss. Sadly, the camera department is the only one that keeps the 17 Pro Max from getting an excellent score.

EN→zh-CNThe Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, launched on September 25, 2025, is the company’s most premium flagship yet, combining cutting-edge technology with elegant craftsmanship. It features a sturdy aluminum frame and a smooth glass front protected by Xiaomi’s Dragon Crystal Glass 3. The phone is IP68-certified, meaning it can survive up to 6 meters underwater for 30 minutes, adding excellent durability. At 219 grams and just 8mm thick, it feels solid yet surprisingly comfortable in hand. The display is one of its biggest highlights — a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED panel offering 68 billion colors, 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and an astonishing 3500 nits of peak brightness. The 1200 × 2608-pixel resolution with 416 ppi density makes every detail look vivid and lifelike.

EN→zh-CNXiaomi is feeling bold and confident with this year's Xiaomi 17 lineup, even if they are only launching the devices in China for now. We rarely see large smartphone makers experiment with features like secondary displays on the back. The last Xiaomi phone with a similar feature was the Xiaomi 11 Ultra, released in 2021. Xiaomi might be onto something this time around, as the rear screen is already confirmed to stay for at least another generation. The rear screen isn't the only highlight feature of the 17 Pro Max too. It is seemingly packed to the bream with some great hardware - a huge and bright LTPO OLED panel on the front, the most powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC, a huge 7,500 mAh battery with fast charging and a capable camera setup. What's not to like?
