Reviews for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra

90% Review Sony Xperia Z Ultra Smartphone | Notebookcheck
Ultra-huge. 6.4-inches, Full HD resolution and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. These are the impressive specs for the combination of a smartphone and a tablet. We are not concerned that the Xperia Ultra Z is not powerful enough to handle all upcoming tasks - but we are not so sure about the ergonomics. Operating the device with just one hand can be a real challenge.

Lastly, it only remains to give our opinion on Sony Xperia Z Ultra: it was made just so Sony could say they made the biggest phablet. Yes, enjoying multimedia content can be a great experience, in case you have very good headphones. Yes, you can draw with a graphite pencil, which is the most natural solution. Yes, it will draw attention wherever you decide to use this Goliath of smartphones. Yes, it can be used as any other smartphone.

And that's the primary reason for the Z Ultra missing out on a 5-star rating. Feel free to restore the fifth star (in your mind, rather than by hacking our website) if you couldn't give a hoot about the camera, but still make sure you also take a peek at our Samsung Galaxy Note 3 review before taking the plunge. To our minds that's still the phablet to beat.

Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition Review
Source: Slashgear English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
The Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition carves out a rather unique place in the Google collection of devices. Here you've got an ideal middle-place between smartphone and tablet, edging a lot more in on the tablet side of things. In this device is the vision we had back at the dawn of small, transportable computers. The Z Ultra is not too big to fit in your (admittedly mega-sized) pocket, and it's not too small that you'd not consider it for a do-anything device on the go.

Video: Sony Xperia Z Ultra review - a phablet that's just too big
Source: Tech Advisor English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
The phablet has a whopping 6.4in display so is closer to the size of a Nexus 7 than a Nexus 5.The device is essentially a super-sized version of the Xperia Z1, with a few little differences. See also 17 best smartphones: The best phone you can buy in 2013 It's got the same stylish brushed aluminium edging, glass rear cover and a fully dust- and waterproof design. Build quality, like the other Xperia phones and Sony products in general, is excellent. The device is astonishingly thin.

WIRED Water and dust resistant. Spectacularly bright display with great contrast and wide viewing angles. 3050 mAh battery easily lasts all day. TIRED It’s crazy big. Odd dock connector location on the left-hand side. Like on the Xperia Z, the tempered-glass front and rear panels are still huge fingerprint magnets. Grainy low-light photos.

The Xperia Z Ultra is one of those devices that makes you gasp. Partly because of its beautiful design and partly because its specs are so great. It's a phablet, but Sony wants you to also remember it's a phone. But if you even want to take occasional photos, then don't bother. Sony's really let itself down here. We admit that a camera on a phablet isn't the reason to buy a device, but we expected a lot more from Sony. This is an excellent phablet, and one that will impress many. But with the higher base price, it could be a lot more impressive in some areas.

It looks great, it feels good in the hand - but it may just be too impossibly big to make phone calls in comfort and without embarrassment. This is a highly capable phone with lots going for it from strong battery life to decent Sony apps, a gorgeous screen to excellent styling. But you do need it to make phone calls, don't you? This is a phone that's worth trying in your hand(s) before you plump for it. If the size isn't a problem, this is a great phone - and the waterproof feature is a cool extra that makes great sense whether you're clumsy, eager to show off down the pub, or a mermaid.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra: The quad-core 2.2GHz MEGA SCREEN PHONDLESLAB
Source: Reg Hardware English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
At more than £600 unlocked, the Ultra is far from cheap, though compared to a 64GB iPhone 5S it’s a steal. Price aside, the Z Ultra is now the definitive VLP. The screen is vast and visually stunning, the battery capacious, the media apps an object lesson in excellence, and the physical design impressive. And it’s waterproof, a first in class. Downsides? No LED flash and a rather mediocre camera, a fixed battery and a rather puny loudspeaker. Not everyone will think it worth close to twice the price of a Galaxy Mega 6.3 but if money is no object or you judge value on the Apple scale, you are unlikely to be disappointed.

70% Sony Xperia Z Ultra Review
Source: Techspot English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
After enjoying my time with the Xperia Z, I have to say that I’m disappointed with the Xperia Z Ultra. The device is insanely fast and complemented by a massive, beautiful 1080p display, but Sony has failed to deliver the necessary software to take advantage of the phone’s interesting hardware features. Ultimately I can’t recommend this phone over Samsung’s Galaxy Note range, especially with the Galaxy Note III on the horizon, because it lacks an overall polish that you need from a large, note-taking-cum-multimedia device. In some respects the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is wonderful, but it’s the critical areas where it falls behind the mark.

This is undoubtedly the most powerful smartphone that money can buy today, full credit to the Snapdragon 800 processor. However, the huge screen does have its fans, and equally the critics. While we believe the size aspect is subjective, we would definitely complement the display for doing the job fairly well - bright and sharp. Build quality is carried forward from the Xperia Z. In a nutshell, this smartphone will appeal to a limited demographic, and within that, it does the job.

The Z Ultra is simply too unwieldy to be used as a primary phone. The camera quality is strictly average and the loud speaker is anything but that. And for this price, we expected at least 32GB of onboard memory. It does have an excellent display, however, and one of the fastest chipsets ever fitted to a phone, which makes it great for entertainment and gaming. If the two above mentioned points are your main criteria, then nothing beats the Z Ultra. For rest of us, we’ll just have to wait for Sony to bring this Triluminos goodness to a screen size that’s more pocketable.

the best phone you'll probably never buy
Source: Engadget English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
Just like we saw with the Samsung Galaxy Mega, your decision to purchase the Xperia Z Ultra depends mostly on its size. The Z Ultra doesn't offer any unique traits that would make people want to deal with its massive frame if they don't want to, and the price is going to scare off shoppers who are on the fence.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra hands-on review: a 6.4-inch Android phablet
Source: Tech Advisor English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
We like the Sony Xperia Z Ultra but the size is an issue here. Do you really want a 6.4in smartphone? Maybe you do if you can't afford a smartphone and a tablet, but at with an expected price of £599 (TBC), it's hardly the most attractive option. Check back soon for a full review.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Even if the Ultra isn’t the “fastest” in terms of benchmarks when it is released later in the year, we envisage users will have no complaints about performance. Transitions between applications and homescreen are faultless. Playing resource hungry content such as multimedia or games won't prove a problem either.
