MSI Katana GF66 review – entry-level gaming will never be the same

Out of the three MSI laptops we’ve tested with the 11th Generation Intel processors, the Katana GF66 happens to have the best battery life. Although all three have the same 53.5Wh unit inside. We got 5 hours and 48 minutes of Web browsing, and about 4 hours and a half of video playback. In order to achieve these results, however, we’ve gone as far as changing the CPU fan curve. We noticed that by default, the processor fan was always spinning. Thankfully, MSI Center makes it pretty easy to tinker with this stuff. Just go to “User scenarios”, then choose “Advanced” on fan control, and drag the dot that corresponds to the cool temperature all the way down to 0%. This means your fan will only start spinning after your CPU has heated up a bit, which is completely harmless and harnesses a bit more screen-on time.

At this point, you might think this is a negative review. IT IS NOT. I must clarify that MSI has done nothing wrong with the decision to go with RTX 3050 Ti and RTX 3050 for the GF66 series. The laptop itself is well built and the overall user experience has been positive without any hiccups. It is just how the industry moves forward with the latest selection of chip. PCMark10 clearly shows the pairing of 11th Gen Intel and RTX 30 series card is still beneficial to the overall user experience. I just wanted to point out that NVIDIA’s promise for ray tracing experience might cause disappointment when customers thought their entry-range RTX card can produce magical results. Generally, I think the RT cores in the RTX 3050 Ti is only useful in less demanding titles or if the user is trying out ray tracing in their own software or games development.

Its subtle-but-weak design, comparatively less powerful GPU, and horrendous battery life are outclassed by the competition like Acer’s Predator Helios 300 (2021) that’s superior in all these aspects. Yes, it bears a more aggressive design but if you can look past that, it’s a superior device through and through. For the same price, you can pick up the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE, which features 6-plus hours of battery life, a colorful display and a sleek chassis. However, it didn’t perform as well as the Katana. Overall, the MSI Katana GF66 isn’t a terrible choice if you want to prioritize performance, but you can do much better for the price.

MSI Katana GF66 11UD is an example of a well-balanced gaming laptop that is capable of offering a sufficient level of performance for the segment, albeit not a record. At the same time, it managed not to fail in many other aspects. Thus, the user has his hands free for the future upgrade of individual internal components, the laptop has a sufficient number of ports, as well as a keyboard suitable for all tasks. Of course, the situation with the display turned out to be twofold. In fact, there's no way around it, the MSI Katana GF66 has plenty of downsides. The screen quality is mediocre – at best – aside from the refresh rate. The battery life is atrocious and charging options feel archaic. Physical port connectivity is out of touch with the 2022 market. And the glaringly cheap chassis construction leaves plenty to be desired. But, if you are looking for a cost-effective gaming laptop that is simply going to sit there and push pixels from your favourite games onto the high refresh rate 1080p screen, MSI’s Katana GF66 will do a reasonable job. It’s not fancy or finesse, but its hardware is cooled well and the 12th Gen Intel CPU will appeal to many. At £1399 though, there are better options on the market. Particularly the Ryzen 7- and RTX 3070-powered Lenovo Legion 5 or Acer Nitro 5, or the Ryzen 9 and RTX 3070 Gigabyte Aorus A5 X1, or the Ryzen 9 and RX 6800M ASUS ROG STRIX G15. A price point of £1399 really is RTX 3070 (or RX 6800M) territory, but the Katana GF66 12UE sample that we have reviewed in this article does not offer that.
