Bar-raising battery life helps Dell’s 14S stand out in a competitive market. The problem is that its performance is already challenged by midrange models that either match it or beat it on list price. Beyond that, component upgrades quickly push this laptop's price into territory where not only do some of the systems we compared become even more compelling alternatives, but like-priced models (like Dell's own XPS line and HP's advanced OmniBook range) outstrip the 14S easily in features and speed. Nonetheless, the Dell 14S is still a reasonable recommendation if you stick to the lower trims and wait for a big Dell.com discount.
