I recommend the Asus Zenbook S 16 to users who want a premium, lightweight laptop that transports well and has a gorgeous OLED display. Visual creatives in particular, will gravitate toward this device. AMD's next-gen chipset provides solid performance, but it falls short in running as cool as other processors on the market, and its battery life is not the best. Prices for the laptop start at $1,399. It is a little expensive, although I'd argue it's well-priced for what you're getting. If you want something more budget friendly, check out the Asus Vivobook Pro 15 which is currently on sale for $899 ($400 off the regular price).

Frankly, I was taken aback by the ZenBook S 16. I did not expect a 16-inch Windows notebook powered by a traditional chip to be as slim, light, and portable as the MacBook Air. That alone is a major selling point, given that the AMD-powered notebook falls right in between a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro. This isn’t a perfect machine, though. Its size and performance give the ZenBook S 16 an edge over the competition, even though the battery life may not surpass that of notebooks from Qualcomm and Apple.

Asus’ latest ultrabook simply packs everything you could want in a Windows laptop and takes it to Apple with a package that’s both stylish and has an awful lot of power. The Ryzen 9 AI HX 370 is one of the best laptop chips we’ve tested, achieving high-riding scores in benchmarks and helping the Zenbook S 16 feel responsive in day-to-day use, too. In addition, its 3K 120Hz OLED panel offers the sacred blend of being responsive and detailed with gorgeous colours and contrast, as well as deep blacks. The 78Whr battery inside also offers solid endurance, too. Where competitors such as the Dell XPS 14 (2024) have caveats such as a shorter battery life or weaker performance, the Zenbook S 16 (2024) doesn’t.

Now that we've seen Intel's 'Meteor Lake' Core Ultra CPUs and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Series, it's AMD's turn in the AI PC spotlight with its Ryzen AI 300 series processors, and the Ryzen 9 HX 370. AMD's first efforts in this sphere – the Ryzen Pro 7000 and 8000 series processors – were underwhelming, with performance from the chips' dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) topping out at a mere 16 Tera Operations per Second (TOPS). That's substantially lower than the 40 TOPS required for Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs, and weedy compared to the 45 TOPS of the Hexagon NPU in the Snapdragon X Elite. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 promises significant improvements, with its NPU dishing out up to 50 TOPS.

The ASUS Zenbook S 16 (UM5606) combines tons of processing and AI power thanks to the all-new AMD Zen 5 CPUs with a dedicated NPU. Despite the thin profile, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 can sustain a 28W power limit plus ~2.70 GHz / 1.80 GHz clock for performance and efficient cores in long loads which is a good result for a machine that weighs a kilo and a half. The AMD Radeon 890M can show more than 40 FPS on Ultra details in games such as Far Cry 6 and Gears 5 which is a respectable score for an iGPU. The comfort under load is surprisingly good. The keyboard doesn’t feel too hot to the touch even when the CPU is loaded at 100% and the fans aren’t intrusive when the “Full-speed mode” or “Performance mode” mode is applied.

Unboxing Asus' Zenbook S16 (2024), an impressively skinny 16-inch laptop boasting AMD Strix Point smarts and a gorgeous OLED display. This fresh performance notebook is about as compact as a 16-incher could possibly be, but the Zenbook S16 certainly doesn't skimp on performance or battery life. This is a pre-production sample so I can't benchmark or test the gaming chops properly, but here's an idea of what to expect from the retail model. Full review hopefully soon! Creators will enjoy the colour accurate OLED screen on the Asus Zenbook S16, as well as that AMD Strix Point power. You've also got an excellent keyboard and some nifty AI features, ideal for video chatting and security purposes.

While there’s no question that the ZenBook S 16 is one of the slimmest and lightest 16-inch laptops on the market, we’re unsure about its real-life performance and its implementation of AI workflows. Everything looks good on paper so far–but things may change when it comes to real-life use. There’s also a concern regarding pricing: the starting price of the ZenBook S 16 is $1399 or around Php 83k converted–but that’s for the lower-end version with a Ryzen AI 9 365 processor, 24GB RAM, and 1 TB storage. We’ll not be surprised if the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 hits the six-digit mark, but we hope ASUS gives it a competitive price once it arrives in the Philippines.

AI might be the mot du jour at Computex 2024 (and every other launch event), but when it comes to producing a high-quality laptop, it’s the engineering that matters and, in this respect, the Asus Zenbook S 16 looks to have it nailed. We’ll have to see how the new AMD chips stack up when it comes to performance and battery life, but physically at least, this laptop hits the sweet spot. It has a large, practical display; it’s light and slim, yet stiff and robust feeling; and it looks the absolute business. I can’t wait to get one in for testing.
