70% Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2012)

The MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2012) is a great laptop for writers. It's light at less than 2.5 pounds, and even if you cart along the AC adapter, you're still carrying less than 3 pounds. It's speedy enough for day to day use, and its keyboard is more comfortable to use than the virtual keyboard on a tablet. Unfortunately, ultrabooks like the Asus Zenbook Prime have caught up in features: the UX31A is imperceptibly heavier, yet has a larger 1080p screen and much more storage space on its SSD. Full blown business ultraportables like the Editors' Choice Lenovo ThinkPad X230 are better still at most tasks, including battery life and storage. The 11-inch MacBook Pro is best as a secondary laptop for when you need more than a tablet.

Apple just couldn't let summer end without a new 11-inch MacBook Air. The 2012 version of the MacBook Air 11" has added processor power and battery life to the 2011 stock and is just as excellent of a deal in terms of size, capability and make. On the downside, it's still lacking in all the same areas: skimpy connectivity, problematic heat dissipation and an overly glossy display.

When we looked at the mid-2012 model of the larger-screened 13.3-inch MacBook Air, we were quick to point out that, impressive as it is, we've seen quite a few Windows ultrabooks with similar displays and internals but lower prices. But that's not so much the case with the smaller model. We've reviewed Asus' 2011 ZenBook UX21, but as of this writing, we haven't yet seen the Asus UX21A with its newer "Ivy Bridge" processor and backlit keyboard.

The MacBook Air is in its third iteration of the current design and it's tangibly better than the two that came before it. The 2010 (and older) models are just plain slow by comparison. Thanks to architectural, frequency and thermal improvements, one of the cores from a 2012 MacBook Air ends up being faster than two from a 2010 MBA. In other words, the 2012 models end up being more than twice as fast as the 2010 models in many of our CPU bound tests.

In terms of performance and usability it's hard to fault the 2012 Apple MacBook Air. It may not have the sheer power of its MacBook Pro brethren, but it's hardly a slacker either with the third-generation Intel Core power making for a much slicker experience than last year's range.

After a year of releases from PC manufacturers, the MacBook Air remains the ultra-thin laptop that sets the standard for the industry. Its build quality, design, and value are difficult for any PC alternative to match. Most can rival the MacBook Air in one or two areas but don’t offer the complete package.

Apple's 2012 refresh of the MacBook Air 11 brings with it some significant improvements from the past base $999 model but this isn't the huge revision many had hoped for. The chassis is still the same extremely thin and light platform as before making it the smallest of the 11-inch laptops on the market. The changes instead are all internal with a newer Core i5 processor that gives a slight performance improvement and better graphics, 4GB of memory instead of 2GB and USB 3.0 ports.

Remember Netbooks and ultraportable laptops? Those 10- and 11-inchers were all the rage a few years ago, but thanks to the rise of larger-screened ultrabooks and smaller-screened tablets, they've been disappearing from the computer landscape. Looking first to the build quality of the new 2012 MacBook Air we have a device which very much looks and feels like the previous model. That isn't a bad thing though as the quality of that older model was top notch in many regards. We get a nice sturdy metal casing which is manufactured to a high standard. Each section fits the next perfectly and we noted no defects or imperfections on our model.

This year’s MacBook Air hasn’t been reinvented in the same way as the MacBook Pro has. It’s essentially a housekeeping update that introduces Intel's Ivy Bridge platform and at long last brings in USB 3. Existing owners won’t need to rush out and upgrade, but this update should keep the MacBook Air competitive with all its Ultrabook rivals for the rest of this year.

Heart transplant. The new Apple MacBook Air 13 Mid 2014 is once again an evolution instead of a revolution, because there are not many differences compared to the last version. We focus on the inner values. A new Intel Core i5-4260U Haswell CPU clocked at 1.4 GHz in combination with 4 GB RAM and a large 256 GB SSD. Sounds appealing.

Which Mac laptop? MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro comparative review
Source: Macworld.co.uk English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
In 2013, when Apple reduced the price of the MacBook Pro with Retina display range, we stopped recommending the 13-inch MacBook Air on the basis that there was only £150 difference in price. As Apple has continued to drop prices we are still looking at just a £150 difference between the two ranges at the entry level. It's great to see Apple reducing prices across its MacBook ranges, but the lower prices of the MacBook Pro Retina range do have the effect of making the MacBook Air look less attractive in comparison. However, we still love the MacBook Air, which is lighter and thinner, although a fraction bigger than the MacBook Pro with Retina display. If it's the MacBook Air that you have your heart set on, you can't go wrong with it, but if you have a little more in your budget, then consider the MacBook Pro with Retina display because it's a really good deal in comparison.

We were sort of expecting the new MacBook to be a letdown, after all very little has changed other than the price tag and the processor speed. Instead we’ve fallen in love with it all over again – it’s simply the best laptop we’ve ever seen. Admittedly the resolution is a bit old-hat, but right now we’d still rather have the extravagant battery life. Only time will tell if we’ll change our mind when the Retina version arrives…

The saving grace of the MacBook remains its outstanding battery life. We generally take manufacturer’s claims with a pinch of salt, but for routine tasks such as wordprocessing and occasional Web browsing the MacBook Air really does live up to Apple’s estimate of 12 hours of battery life. It may look a little old-fashioned, but the ability to get a full day’s work from a lightweight laptop such as this makes the MacBook Air an excellent choice for business travellers.

Many people will harp on about the dated display, but that £100 price cut will appeal to plenty of people who just want a lightweight laptop with good battery life. If you care about screen quality above all other considerations then probably not. The MacBook Air's screen isn't bad, but it isn't good either: it's just deeply average. This will be enough to dismiss the MacBook Air in some eyes, but this doesn't tell the whole story. That's because everything else about the MacBook Air remains outstanding. Its design is still unmatched and the battery life is out of this world considering the base 13-inch Macbook Air only costs £850 now. This also means it's exceedingly good value, so much so that anyone who is 'platform neutral' will find it hard to consider anything else.

What was once a luxury ultraportable has become a bargain. For a reasonable $999, the MacBook Air boasts best-in-class battery life, fast performance and an excellent keyboard and touchpad. Plus, OS X Mavericks is easier to use and less of a hassle than Windows 8 when it comes to security updates. However, the flash storage on this Air isn't as speedy as that on the last model.

Source: Macworld.co.uk English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
As we anticipated Apple has reacted to the very minor price difference between the MacBook Pro with Retina display and the 2013 MacBook Air, by reducing the price by as much as £130. This means the whole MacBook Air line up is now under £1,000, which should serve to make it even more popular than it is currently. Unfortunately in some areas the 2014 Mac Air isn't quite as good as last year's model - the flash storage seems to be slower than it was in 2013. For this reason, if you can get a discounted 13in 2013 MacBook Air from the Apple refurb store, it is still be worth considering as an alternative to the newer 2014 model.

This is a niche device, suitable for Apple users that need both portability and power. While it’s tempting to compare it to other Ultrabooks, it actually has a lot in common with the Surface Pro 2, which has very similar specs and is built for a very specific type of Windows user. For the platform agnostic looking for thin, light, and powerful, the MacBook Air is certainly worth considering. Its “acceptable” display and other drawbacks make it tough to outright recommend over any and all competition.

The upgrades made to the MacBook Air this year are minor, meaning that those looking for an overhaul will be disappointed. While the rest of the recipe is great, we're still underwhelmed by the screen and this is an area that really needs attention. It's particularly concerning as the MacBook Pro continues to improve: the cheapest model with a Retina Display is £999 and has a more powerful processor.

So does the MacBook Air succeed in its new role as an everyday laptop? Well, you'll never confuse it for the $500 Toshiba Satellites or HP Pavilions down at Best Buy—even upstaged by the new MacBook, it remains a premium piece of engineering, with a hardware/software synergy that other vendors can only sigh after.

80% Apple MacBook Air 2015 review (13-inch): is this a better choice than the smaller MacBook?
Source: T3 English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
The 2015 MacBook Air is unexciting and not as fashionable as it once was, but its excellent battery life, decent performance and good selection of ports make it worthy of your consideration for another year. Though it doesn’t quite pack the power of a Retina MacBook Pro, Intel’s latest processor and faster storage make it a genuinely nippy machine that handles day-to-day tasks with ease. For owners of compatible peripherals, Thunderbolt 2 is a useful addition.

Much faster storage and a better performing processor/graphics combo make this year's 13-inch MacBook Air a technically better machine than its predecessor, but unless you really need those gains it's not worth the upgrade. That's particularly so in the absence of any new features – such as the Retina MacBook Pro's Force Touch Trackpad.

One of the major feathers in the 2015 Macbook Air's cap is the upgrade to Intel's latest Broadwell processors. However, it may about to be overtaken. Performance and storage upgrades keep the already superb MacBook Air ticking over, but the low-resolution screen is starting to hold it back.

The Apple MacBook Air is a rare case where time has worked in a notebook’s favour. Each rendition has seen its technology mature, and even its sore points are somehow redeemed, like how the low resolution of its screen is offset by excellent battery life. Standards today deem the Air not the thinnest, nor lightest notebook on the market.

The 2015 MacBook Air is a very good upgrade over last year's model. You get better performance and better battery life, all for $999. I also continue to like the comfortable keyboard and accurate touchpad, even though the Air lacks the new ForcePad. However, the notebook's design is due for an overhaul, and shoppers deserve a sharper and more colorful display.

For all its good points – and several still remain – the 13in MacBook Air feels like a diminished force, and Apple’s reticence to update it with Force Touch or a much-needed Retina display says a lot about its future in the MacBook family. While the MacBook Air no longer turns head like it once did, this remains a solid machine for work and play, and a staple of pretty much every airplane, coffee shop and conference room we've been in over the past few years. Some parts of the body are feeling ever more out of date when compared to the sharpest new laptop designs, especially the lower-res display and its thick screen bezel.

Given that a sub-1kg 12in MacBook is on the way and the entry level MacBook Pro with Retina Display is just £150 more than the basic MacBook Air, the Air finds itself in an awkward position. It can still hold its own, though: the extra battery life compared to the MacBook Pro is a genuinely tempting prospect, as is the 200g difference in weight. We just wish the screen was better: 1,440x900 pixels in 2015 simply isn't enough.

After some extensive testing, we found the MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) to be little different overall to the 2014 model. The Thunderbolt 2 update will prove useful for connecting to high-resolution UHD displays, and a few percent of added processor power is never unwelcome. But hoped-for improvements in graphics performance and battery longevity did not arise in our testing, in spite of a new Intel processor which was expected to shepherd benefits in both areas.

It's great to see Apple reducing prices across its MacBook ranges, but the lower prices of the MacBook Pro Retina range do have the effect of making the MacBook Air look less attractive in comparison

Apple's 13-incher will STILL cost you a bomb: MacBook Air 2015

To be fair, the battery life of the MacBook Air is still hard to beat, and a more mass-market price tag would probably see the darn thing flying off the shelves again. But the bottom line is that it’s now an entry-level laptop with a mid-range price tag. Apple justifies its premium prices by delivering premium design, and on that score the MacBook Air, sadly, just doesn’t cut it anymore, but at least it has a choice of USB and Thunderbolt interfacing as standard.

Still a great option for people in need of a decent battery and a couple of standard sized USB ports, the 11 inch MacBook Air is no longer the best ultra-light out there, and as such, it’s difficult to call this model out as something to buy. While the Air design and build are still second to none, the price of this computer isn’t far off where 13 inch machines normally sit, and you don’t even get a decent screen or a memory card slot to work with.

Yet, despite Apple’s attempts to hobble the Air’s appeal with a frugal smattering of upgrades, and growing pressure from a cast of able contenders, the 11in MacBook Air still delivers almost everything you could ask from an ultraportable. A dramatic facelift (or early retirement) is almost certainly due in the not-too-distant future – but for now, the 11in MacBook Air serves as a welcome reminder of what made Apple’s ultraportable so great in the first place.

The 13-inch MacBook Air is Apple’s entry-level laptop, starting at £949 (US$999). It might lack the super-sharp Retina screen of the Macbook and MacBook Pro models but its display and performance is fine for most everyday uses. It boasts enough USB ports and other slots to make it more useful out of the box than the more limited, USB-C-only 12-inch MacBook or Pro. And its Wi-Fi is the same high standard as even the top-of-the-range MacBook Pro. If you need raw power go for the Pro. If you need the smallest Mac laptop there is, look at the 12-inch MacBook. But, all in all, despite it not changing much year after year we still love the MacBook Air for its design, price, size and features.

The MacBook Air remains a fine piece of computing hardware, and there's a reason or ten that it has stuck around as long as it has. But unless you're dead-set on sticking to macOS, better options are available in this price range. And if you are a Mac die-hard and looking for an extremely light laptop, don't dismiss the impressive 2-pound Apple MacBook (2017)$1,299.00 at Apple Store. If anything, that current-generation MacBook, as well as the latest 13-inch MacBook Pros, feel more solid and well-built than the MacBook Air. If you aren't put off by their $300-higher starting prices, they may be worth paying more for, if you can get used to the keyboards and having only USB Type-C at your fingertips.

80% Apple MacBook Air 13in (mid-2017) review: has Apple changed enough to stay on top?
Source: It Pro English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
The upgrades made to the MacBook Air this year are minor, meaning that those looking for an overhaul will be disappointed. While the rest of the recipe is great, we're still underwhelmed by the screen and this is an area that really needs attention.

The MacBook Air remains an excellent ultraportable choice for students and other macOS fans with basic computing needs, but despite killer battery life, it will disappoint power users with its low-resolution display and outdated processor.

MacBook Air finally gets a touchscreen, no thanks to Apple
Source: CNet English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
You can preorder the AirBar for the 13-inch MacBook Air on the company's website, and it will soon be available through Amazon for $99. There's no planned international release yet, but that works out to roughly £75 or AU$130. The Windows version is already available for around $80.
