Reviews for the Apple MacBook Pro 13 Late 2020 M1 Entry (8 / 256 GB)
In addition to the MacBook Air, Apple also equips the entry-level MacBook Pro 13 with the new M1 processor. The performance is much higher than before, but can it justify the higher price compared to the MacBook Air? And are there any other differences?

We've spent over a month with all three of Apple's M1 Macs, testing them and comparing them to other computers including Intel-based Macs and Windows laptops. Over this past month, it's been made clear that Apple is currently revolutionizing the personal computing industry in ways that many didn't even imagine. Apple is doing it with their very first Apple Silicon chip, the M1, which is meant to replace the lowest-end entry-level Intel chips. So far.. the performance is so good that it's taking on even the highest-end Intel Macs in various different use-cases. I also discuss gaming, which was hugely controversial when Apple first announced the transition to their own custom chips, especially since Boot Camp support is going away. However, ever since people got their hands on these new Macs, the gaming side of the M1 Mac has been thriving.

The fully integrated control of the M1 chip, macOS BigSur, and Mac hardware kicks off the beginning of a new era for Apple. The venerable hardware innovator now has full control of its ability to differentiate on product, performance, price, and place. As Apple Silicon makes its way into the full line up of hardware, users can expect significant advantages over commodity and purpose built PCs. Moreover, the announcements made at the 2020 Worldwide Developers Conference and the November 10th event bring the convergence of iOS and macOS one step closer.

The M1 equipped MacBook Pro is just as impressive as the smaller MacBook Air, but the limitations of Apple’s Silicon hardware may make it a tough choice for some professionals.

Overall, I really like the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 and it’s an excellent choice for power users. But I think for the vast majority of people the new Air is “Pro” enough.

If you are looking to buy a new laptop and don't mind spending Rs 1,22,900, you can't go wrong with the new MacBook Pro. It is worth every penny. It is a fantastic general-purpose computer that almost everyone -- except gamers -- will love. It is perfect for working professionals, and perfect for students. For gamers, obviously, there are better laptops out there. The M1 chip offers great graphics performance compared to previous Intel chips, but the MacBook Pro is not a gaming laptop. Then, there is the new MacBook Air M1 13-inch. The performance difference between the two laptops is not much, though Pro has a brighter screen and better battery life, and if you are not going to edit a lot of videos, create 3D models or compile programs you will be more than fine with the new Air. Essentially, you can buy either the new Pro or the new Air, and you are going to get an extremely fast computer with arguably the best ever battery life in a laptop. Yes, M1 is that good and so is the MacBook Pro 13-inch.

In this video, I used 4 different methods of playing games on the M1 chip: Playing Native ARM-based Mac games that have been updated to Apple Silicon, playing x86 Mac games under Rosetta 2, playing iPhone & iPad games by side-loading them using iMazing and finally, playing x86 Windows 10 games by using Crossover 20 to emulate them!

But should you go for this Mac or the MacBook Air? That’s a tougher choice and again depends on how you use Macs. If you spend your time in Safari, Music and Mail, you won’t see much benefit for the extra £300. If you need high-level sustained performance, this entry-level MacBook Pro is a solid buy – and staggering when you think this will be the least powerful M1 MacBook Pro Apple will ever release.

I have been covering notebooks for a long time and I haven’t seen leaps in performance and usability that can compare on any level to what I have seen here with the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro. Not only that, I haven’t seen a transition to a whole new type of processor carried out so effortlessly and seamlessly. Apple hasn’t just rewritten the notebook rule book, they straight up tossed it into the shredder.

The Apple MacBook Pro 2020 MYD82LL/A is a bestselling high-end laptop 2020 laptop that received positive reviews for its powerful hardware, lengthy battery life, great keyboard, super-fast SSD hard drive and beautiful retina display. It received some criticism for a limited selection of ports and a design that’s almost identical to previous models, with only a few improvements. Featuring Apples very own brand new M1 chips, this late 2020 MacBook Pro is one of the first to feature Apples new hardware instead of Intels CPUs. Despite some similarities to previous years’ models, the Macbook Pro remains the top high-end laptop to beat thanks to its combination of hardware prowess and design finesse.

The new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro come with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, that can be used to charge the devices, transfer data at high speeds and you can even use them to connect a 6K external monitor. The new devices now come with Wi-Fi 6, which is a major improvement over the older Intel-based MacBook devices. Wi-Fi 6 improves data transfer speeds, provides better performance in crowded areas like offices or malls, and it also helps to improve the battery life of the devices. Both devices also support Bluetooth 5.0 for connecting peripherals, and they also come with a 3.5mm auxiliary jack for headphones.

Lisa Gade reviews both the late 2020 MacBook Air and 13” MacBook Pro with the new M1 Apple Silicon processors. These ARM-based CPUs offer tremendous performance, heat and battery life improvements, even when relying on Apple’s Rosetta 2 Intel emulation mode. Apple’s own programs are ARM-native as is the Big Sur operating system these laptops ship with. A growing list of 3rd party programs are going universal or native with M1 support. The casing and design for both machines is identical to their Intel predecessors. We compare the 2 laptops, look at compatibility issues, and compare them to Windows competitors and more powerful Mac laptops like the 16” MacBook Pro. And yes, they can run iOS and iPad apps, though that list is short and the experience is challenging without a touch screen.

Prices for the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 processor start at S$1,849. It's not cheap but if it lives up to its performance claims, it could be something of a bargain. If you absolutely cannot wait, I wrote earlier that it should be safe to update to these new Macs if your usage centres around Apple's own apps and web apps. Those apps have been designed to run on M1 and would work flawlessly out of the box. On the other hand, if you rely on a lot of third-party apps, it's prudent to adopt and a wait-and-see approach – unless your bank account ends in more zeroes than you care to count.

The MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1, 2020) is the most exciting laptop Apple has released in years. The new M1 chip offers exceptional battery life, and in our early testing performance has been excellent. It's just a shame about the old design.

This feels like the start of something impressive thanks to new Apple silicon in the M1 processor - which results in lots of power and impressive battery life. It will be fascinating to see not only where Apple goes next, but how the industry responds.

I was giddy during the first couple of days using the new 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro, and each time I witnessed another broken benchmark record, my excitement levels rose. Then there’s the battery that seems like it could go on forever, even when you’re doing serious work. I’ve seen and tested a lot of Macs—I did testing for MacUser Labs back during the Motorola 68000-to-PowerPC transition, and I even reviewed the first Intel Macs for MacAddict. But this… this is something else. This is a revolutionary moment for the Mac.

Now powered by Apple’s M1 CPU, the 13-inch MacBook Pro remains a workhorse for those who want a compact macOS laptop that's still powerful enough to perform processor-intensive workflows.

There are two things to say about the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 chip: one, the M1 and the work Apple has done to make a difficult processor transition seamless is a remarkable success; and two, this particular MacBook Pro doesn’t necessarily seem like a worthwhile upgrade over the MacBook Air with an M1 chip.

Call it the emancipation of Apple, the company’s freedom song or just plain liberation. With the advent of the M1 chip, Apple is free –– free to be faster and stronger, free to dominate. And the company’s wasting no time in asserting its dominance. Not only does the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 have better overall and graphics performance, it has some of the longest battery life we’ve ever seen on a laptop.

I’m normally wary of advising people of purchasing first-generation products, because they almost invariably have kinks that need to be worked out. But from what I can tell of the MacBook Pro 13-inch, there aren’t any. I’m sure over time as more people use the laptop, issues will creep up. But standing here at the outset, this looks as though it’s as solid a machine as its Intel-powered siblings — but better thanks to its, impressive battery life.
