Altogether, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a solid smartphone, and while some aspects of it aren’t up to par with the Razr Ultra, Samsung’s flip phone is more afforable. The Z Flip 7 costs $1,642.99, while the Razr Ultra is priced at $1,899.99. Both phones are considerably too expensive in my opinion, but at least if you want a solid foldable, and the Razr Ultra is out of your price range, Samsung’s handset might be for you. I would recommend this handset to someone who wants to try this sort of foldable phone, doesn’t mind that they’re not getting top quality pictures and isn’t a mobile gamer. However, with a longer battery life, and the great 4.1-inch Cover Screen, the Z Flip 7 isn’t a bad option, but I wouldn’t consider it the best flip style foldable on the market anymore, as that crown can easily go to the Razr Ultra this year.

I started this review by saying I’m not sold on flip phones. The constant need to fold the phone open to do normal phone stuff is a big reason why. It starts to feel cumbersome very quickly. I’m pulling my phone out of my pocket many times throughout the day, and that’s an extra step between me and my task. Motorola makes this experience a bit better by offering nearly the full phone experience on the external display. I simply don’t have to fold a Razr phone open as often as a Z Flip. Samsung greatly improved the Cover Screen hardware, but the software still limits it. So, I’m left with a big, beautiful edge-to-edge screen that can’t really do what I want it to do. Samsung absolutely nailed the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s hardware and design, but for my money, I’d rather have a more powerful external display.

If you don’t care that much about using the cover screen beyond widgets (or are happy to side-load them via a third-party app), there’s a fairly strong argument for choosing the Z Flip 7 this year. The design is impressively slim and sturdy, battery life is very good, and the extensive software support remains unmatched. If the cover screen were less restrictive, it would be a slam-dunk for Samsung. As things stand, however, I’m still recommending the Razr 60 Ultra over the Galaxy Z Flip 7, because Motorola makes far more of the foldable format.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is the best foldable phone in my opinion. After using the Z Fold 6 for most of the last year, it’s refreshing to switch to a flip-style phone. I’m especially glad it’s a much lighter, more compact device for me to carry around. Thanks to big upgrades like its larger Flex Window display, multimodal AI capabilities, and Samsung DeX, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has all the ingredients in what I want in a phone — and it helps that it doesn’t cost a fortune either. Over on the creative side of things, no other phone matches the utility of the Flip for what I want in a camera phone. Although the camera performance is barely improved from the Z Flip 6, its rich camera app and handy Flex Window display make it more powerful to use. Motorola has dominated the flip phone scene for the last couple of years now, and while the Razr Ultra (2025) is a super upgrade, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 convinces me that Samsung is back on top.

We didn't go in expecting dramatic changes and we didn't get those with the Galaxy Z Flip7. Perhaps the most notable development is in the physical appearance of the clamshell, and the slim body coupled with the new large cover screen make it that extra bit more of a looker than previous attempts. The fact that we've also gotten higher battery capacity and a meaningful improvement in endurance is also not to be overlooked. Some of the Z Flip7's pros are as true now as they were true of the previous generation. One UI is about as feature-packed as there is and remains a key Galaxy selling point in every comparison despite, in this particular case, Samsung's continued refusal to unlock the full potential of the cover screen. The camera system may not exactly be top-cameraphone-grade, but it's pretty great for a clamshell.

The larger cover screen feels downright luxurious compared to the teeny one used on the previous models. Coupled with a slightly bigger battery and a slimmer design, the Flip 7 is a looker. Summarizing the downsides, there are two things that stand out. One is how Samsung treats the cover screen as some sort of a widget center rather than allowing users to fully customize it, and the other is the Exynos 2500 chipset, which is not flagship-grade. But those are not dealbreakers and with its long software support and many other little improvements, the Flip 7 regains the crown as the go-to Flip phone for buyers.

In the end, while not absolutely perfect, the Z Flip 7 represents a major step forward for Samsung’s pocket-sized foldable series. The compromises are smaller, to the point where they’re easy to ignore. It’s a great all-rounder, has a much better cover screen, better camera performance and an internal screen that’s not too narrow. I really like it. You could argue that Motorola’s Razr 60 Ultra makes better use of the cover screen – and I’d agree with that assessment – but with the build quality, display quality, software optimisations and improved cameras, the Z Flip 7 is much closer to competing with Motorola’s super clamshell. I’ve really enjoyed the Galaxy Z Flip 7. The very action of opening and closing the phone is always a joy, despite the snappy action, and the phone feels futuristic and unusual. I love how convenient it is, the large inner screen is great for video, and the multi-tasking features make it useful. The camera is fun, especially if you take a lot of selfies or group photos, and the cover screen’s updated tech makes it look excellent. What the Galaxy Z Flip 7 isn’t is a hardcore gaming machine or a battery life monster. If those aspects are important to you, this will not meet your mobile needs. Neither are especially important to me, and I’ve been able to enjoy the wonderful convenience of the folding design with few concerns, provided I remember to charge it every night. I’d consider an upgrade if I owned a Galaxy Z Flip 5, but not if I owned a Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Overall, I've enjoyed my time with this flexible Galaxy smartphone. Sure, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 still won't suit power users who are constantly snapping or streaming. But I find I can do everything I need to with around 5-6 hours of screen on time per day. That includes camera capture and video chats, mixing it up between the cover and main screens. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 can cope with gaming on the go. BUT, Wuthering Waves runs best with lower graphics settings and this foldable phone does get quite toasty under pressure. Sadly the camera setup hasn't been upgraded at all vs the Z Flip 6. But all the same, this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 can capture some decent looking pics and home movies, and is especially good for selfie fans. Just expect the usual Sammy processing shenanigans.

I expect something similar this time, but the Exynos chipset’s image processor might change things. I look forward to testing out this device’s cameras, but I’m hoping it’s the same as last year or better, and hopefully not worse. I really liked this year’s Razr Ultra, but Motorola increased the price of its handset to $1,899, which is a little much. Compared to $1,462, Samsung’s handset seems like a better option. Of course, the Razr Ultra has a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, a 4,700mAh battery, a 50-megapixel triple camera setup, 16GB of RAM and more, which makes it more ‘Ultra’ than the Z Flip 7. It’s impressive that Samsung is not raising the price of the Z Flip 7 in Canada, but also providing a better experience. While the phone itself isn’t all that exciting, especially compared to the Razr Ultra, the Z Flip 7 might be foldable if you want a solid experience but don’t want to pay $1,900. Of course, I’ll need to put this through its paces before making any concrete judgments.

Though not quite as revolutionary an upgrade as the Z Fold 7, I think the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has enough to shout about. The larger cover screen, in particular, should make a huge difference to the Flip experience, allowing it to better compete with alternatives from Motorola and Xiaomi while adding a distinctly premium look to the foldable, which, dare I say, was missing before. The lack of any camera hardware changes is a little disappointing to see, but the added camera features – from new filters to a new auto shooting mode – arguably cater more to the Flip user’s needs than a high-res zoom lens. This is a phone designed for selfie takers, after all, and I wager that the 50MP main camera will do just as good a job as ever at that. Some might bemoan the use of the Exynos chipset, but I’d argue that flip-style foldables can rarely handle the thermals that come with top-end performance anyway, so for a less power-hungry user, it’s more than enough.

Having created the current foldables market, Samsung has spent the last few iterations playing catchup as Chinese manufacturers started to out-design the Korean giant with slimmer models and even a tri-folding screen. But with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, Samsung is finally ready to show who's the king. The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a stunner. At 8.9mm thick, it's on par with the the Oppo Find N5, and just slightly thicker than the just-announced Honor Magic V5 (8.88mm thick). Honestly, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is approaching the limits of how thin it can be, due to how phones have to accommodate the USB-C port. Of course, they can always skip the port entirely, and just go with wireless charging, but that's an altogether different story for another time.

The thinner bezels on the Z Flip 7 are a great touch to make it look more like a premium phone, but the Z Fold 7’s slimmer design is the big news here. Combine both those devices with the more-affordable Z Flip 7 FE and the Galaxy Watch 8 models, and it’s not hard to see Samsung’s July Unpacked as a winning event this year. While these flexible mobiles sport a similar design, their specs are quite different in many ways. For instance, the Samsung Z Flip 7 is powered by an Exynos 2500 which is apparently energy efficient, while Motorola uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite.
