78% HP Omen Max 16 review: Premium power meets an understated design

The HP Omen Max 16 is a capable, though rather dull, option in the highly competitive field of mid to high-end gaming laptops with Nvidia RTX 50-series hardware. It provides performance that’s broadly like the alternatives yet lacks features that might help it separate it from the pack. It doesn’t have the flair of the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 or the performance of the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 16. Yet there’s one thing about the HP Omen Max 16 that’s very attractive: the price. Listed at an MSRP of $3,339.99 and currently sold (and in stock!) on Best Buy for $3,139.99, the Omen Max 16 is towards the low end of pricing for a 16-inch gaming laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 9 and RTX 5080. And, as mentioned, it performs about as well as its more expensive peers.

The Omen Max 16 is a great looking laptop, the model we were sent for the review is finished in a stunning white ceramic coating that certainly catches the eye. The finish is further accentuated by the great RGB implementation across the keyboard and underglow strip. However, when we look at performance, it is plagued by the usual thermal issues that arise when manufacturers cram power hungry parts in to thin chassis. When using the ‘Unleashed' power profile found in the Omen Gaming Hub software, the Core Ultra 275HX very quickly hits its thermal limits and in turn throttles power usage, which results in substantial dips in performance core clock speeds and performance. The 1TB SSD also disappointed when considering the £2999 price point. Game install sizes have grown year on year and we think 1TB just isn't enough for a premium gaming machine in 2025. The screen is a saving grace though – it's gorgeous, producing vibrant, crisp and smooth visuals which will satisfy even the most demanding pixel peepers.

Then again, at ₹3.1 lakhs, even this base model is an expensive proposition, putting it well beyond reach for most mainstream buyers. So, for the few who can afford it, is it worth it? If raw power is your top priority, then absolutely. The HP Omen Max 16 is easily one of the most capable gaming laptops of 2025.

The HP Omen Max 16 is a true desktop replacement, and is studded with fast ports to move data in and out. It has the expected low battery life of a gaming laptop, but its 32GB of RAM may also be a bit small for heavy modern workloads.

As someone who’s been using an HP Omen for quite a while now, I had high hopes for the HP Omen Max 16. And for the most part, HP delivered with its powerful overall performance, epic display, solid keyboard, and decent heat management. However, I wanted more out of the gaming performance and battery life, especially for its price. If you’re looking for something with strong battery life and epic performance, check out the Gigabyte Aorus Master 16 for over $1,000 less. However, you simply cannot beat the HP Omen Max’s 16-inch OLED display. That color is straight up dripping.

I was somewhat skeptical about the RTX 50-series, but this brilliant notebook and the RTX 5090-powered Alienware Area-51 PC have shown me how amazing Nvidia’s latest laptop and desktop GPUs are. The Omen Max 16 delivers a brilliant gaming experience thanks to its powerful performance and gorgeous OLED display. Price aside, if this is what we can expect from other RTX 50 laptops (and PCs) in 2025, then I’m all onboard.
