We find it difficult to recommend the Blackview BV5900 for two reasons: It is not competitive with existing smartphones including Blackview’s very own BV6800 Pro and its components are likely to struggle under load as clearly indicated by our benchmark results. I didn’t find the native launcher particularly intuitive, but you can always load your own (I tried Nova Launcher and it worked fine). My biggest disappointment was with the quality of the main (RGB) camera, especially given the 48MP sensor. Blackview makes a big deal out of Night Mode, for example, but it is not as good as either Google’s or Huawei’s. The captured JPEGs also aren’t quite as good as they could be given the high-resolution sensor. Blackview could do a lot to address that by supporting RAW capture, at least in third-party camera apps, but says it has no plans to do so. Then again, it is a $500 phone with a ton of other features, so it isn’t entirely fair to compare image quality to a typical $700+ flagship model. Plus, if you need thermal imaging, the only other smartphone-based solutions will cost you twice as much.

We are also surprised to see the ultrawide camera with autofocus, 256GB of standard storage + dedicated microSD card slot, fast 66W charging and impressive 30W wireless charging. One of the few downsides of the BV9200 is its inadequate display brightness and battery life. As an outdoor-centric smartphone, we would have wished for better sunlight legibility and much longer battery life. As far as alternatives go, we found the Ulefone Armor 17 Pro to be the closest match as it features roughly the same hardware, albeit being more expensive. The Ulefone contender has a bigger battery and a night vision camera on its side but skips the stereo speakers and offers slower wireless charging. So at the end of the day, the BV9200 is a well-balanced rugged phone that implements many of the essential 2023 features without breaking the bank.

Our experience with the BV9300 was heavily coloured by being sent a model built for the Russian market. It refused to connect to the Google servers, making it essentially useless for anything that uses Google apps or services. This phone comes in two flavours, one with an ample LED light on the rear, the “Lighting” model, and the one we got, the ‘Measuring’ version. If you haven’t guessed, the critical feature of this model is a laser beam (or is it infra-red?) that allows the phone to measure distances with a reasonable level of accuracy.
