With such a high price tag, you'd expect Alienware to pack this laptop with all the best goodies. For the most part, it has, but the screen is disappointing, the unplugged performance is awful, and the keyboard feels cheap. At least this gives Dell plenty of scope to make next year's version better.

But even though a gaming laptop may not leave the home very often, a laptop is still supposed to be portable, even if it’s only once in a blue moon. Even if you aren’t moving it, it’s still a behemoth to fit on a desk or table, and that power brick is an obstacle in itself. This isn’t a dealbreaker, just something to keep in the back of your mind should you pick up your own: with great power comes great space commitment. And if I can nitpick for just a moment, I could do without the dedicated button for Microsoft’s Copilot. I get it, integrating AI features like this is a current trend. But, I can think of at least half a dozen other shortcuts I’d want taking up 1.5 letter keys’ worth of real estate instead (even on such a big keyboard). These are minor foibles, at the end of the day, and don’t offset all the power packed into this sleek form.

The Alienware 18 Area-51 is the most powerful gaming laptop we’ve tested, with serious performance alongside a classically over-the-top look, a sublime mechanical keyboard, and a decent 18-inch screen. It is horrendously expensive though, and comes with meagre battery life. The Medion Erazer Beast 16 X1 Ultimate (RTX 5090) is virtually £1000 less, comes with a 16-inch Mini LED screen for punchier brightness and deeper blacks, as well as much better battery life, although it lacks the space-age design and ultimate power of Alienware’s choice. If you want a laptop that’s big and brash in every way, then the new 18 Area-51 is likely to tick a lot of boxes in a way that only Alienware really can. I usually set up my review laptops with everything I need to get work done and also some play. The Alienware 18 Area-51 was different. This is like getting a Ferrari. I felt like this wasn’t really a laptop I should do basic work on. I mean, I don’t need to test if web browsing and email work. Just look at the specs! So I set this up to game, and I did test basic video editing. I really don’t play heavy games, and I am pretty anti-social, so I don’t get involved in online gaming. My basic gaming list is simple games that aren’t massively heavy, and this laptop just breezed through those. I am not a pixel peeper or a frame rate snob. I’m not examining the performance as closely as those of you considering buying this laptop.

Be prepared to shell out the big bucks for the Alienware 18 Area-51. Prices start at $3,200 for the base model. My review unit retails for $4,450, although I have seen discounts on it. If you're looking for a lighter option, I suggest checking out the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i. It houses similar hardware and weighs just 5.67 pounds. The MSI Raider 18 HX is another solid option that comes with a 4K display.
