Reviews for the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra

As much as I was blown away by the Pura 80 Ultra’s photographic ability, cameras are just one piece of the flagship phone puzzle. Taken as a whole, there are unfortunately too many hardware letdowns here, on top of the already restrictive software. There’s only so much Huawei can do in-house, and without access to current-gen components, the firm has fallen behind on performance and battery life. The Pura 80 Ultra still gets plenty right, like its top-tier water resistance and lightning-fast charging speeds. I’m sure the distinctive design will earn plenty of fans, too. But for Western audiences, who take 5G connectivity as a given and use Google services on the daily, this will always be a seriously niche proposition.

The HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra is made for content creators, people who love a sharp and clear zoom range, and anyone who wants devices that can achieve almost cinema-quality results right from their pockets. It truly earns the title Ultimate Zoom Beast in 2025. The HUAWEI Pura 80 Pro, on the other hand, is for the same demographic of end users but can do without the extra zoom range, at a lower cost. It’s kind of just a bonus for both phones that they can double as portable speakers. With official Philippine SRPs starting at PHP 59,999 for the Pura 80 Pro, and PHP 89,999 for the Pura 80 Ultra; whichever one you choose, you’re getting a flagship camera system with a beautiful design and premium features across the board.

The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra sets a new standard in mobile imaging, earning itself the highest ever DXOMARK Camera score and the top spot in our ranking. The new Huawei flagship device combines cutting edge hardware, including a 1-inch sensor with LOFIC technology (Lateral OverFlow Integration Capacitor is an advanced pixel design that aims at increasing dynamic range by temporarirly storing excess of light to prevent saturation, while keeping low noise and suppressing the risk of artifacts on motion areas that usually happen with multi-exposure), note that some few devices like the Honor Magic 6 Ultimate already featured this kind of technology in the past. In addition it has a multispectral sensor for improved color management, and a variable aperture on the primary camera.A dual tele setup with 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom lenses offers a lot of flexibility when zooming.

The Pura 80 Ultra has some serious camera chops that allow it to hold its own against the rest of the high-end cameraphones, and it's priced accordingly. However, it's also disadvantaged in some significant ways, outside of Huawei's control. Another top-tier Huawei cameraphone, another conundrum about what to make of it. As a proper flagship device, the Pura 80 Ultra arrives with a flashy design, top-tier ingress protection, fast charging, great speakers and innovative cameras that capture great photos and great nighttime video. It certainly has its merits; however, its high price tag puts it in direct competition with the best smartphones out there, while it's also disadvantaged in some significant ways, outside of Huawei's control. Most notably, the Pura 80 Ultra is denied some important pieces of technology in Western markets, including top-of-the-shelf chipsets and 5G network compatibility, as well as full Google service support and recent Android versions. While Huawei can patch around some of these limitations, the end result is a phone that's not competitive in terms of performance or battery life, and those are hard to justify.

That's a very tough question. The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is no doubt a very powerful camera phone, but it lags behind in almost every other area. The chipset is built on an old node, the screen is not the brightest out there, and the software support is almost nonexistent. The price is also steep at around 1,200 euros (around $1,400 after direct conversion), and the lack of Google Mobile Services adds salt to the already open wound. For that amount of money most people will probably buy a Galaxy S25 Ultra and be done with it. Which is a shame, really, because the camera system inside the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is a true masterpiece, from the big 1-inch sensor under the main camera lens to the innovative dual-periscope telephoto camera. Let's just hope that the Pura 80 Ultra will raise the bar and push other manufacturers to up their camera game.

If you live in China or Europe and photography is your primary smartphone use case, the Pura 80 Ultra represents the current pinnacle of mobile camera technology. For US buyers, the math becomes much harder. Gray market pricing, warranty concerns, and software limitations create significant barriers. Unless you’re a professional photographer who absolutely needs this camera system and money isn’t a concern, there are safer flagship options available domestically. This phone succeeds brilliantly at pushing mobile photography into professional territory through genuine hardware innovation. Whether that translates into value for you depends on where you live and whether you’re willing to navigate Huawei’s current market complexities. It’s incredible technology that unfortunately isn’t accessible to everyone who might appreciate it. Geography shouldn’t determine access to innovation, but that’s the reality we’re dealing with here.

Most of the headlines will be on that zoom arrangement, as the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra rocks a dual lens setup using a single 1/1.28-inch sensor. This allows for 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom, with OIS. You can punch in up to a hundred times and the results are rather impressive. The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra also boasts a variable aperture wide shooter with one-inch sensor, plus some respectable 4K video recording. I've spent some time testing the camera in Dubai and here's my early thoughts.

The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is an intriguing cameraphone that is not afraid to push the boundaries of what's currently possible. We'll conduct a thorough review soon to provide a more comprehensive verdict, but at first glance, it appears to be setting new standards in the segment with its unique take on mobile photography hardware. The best thing is that it's not just the camera hardware either; Huawei has really paid attention to the tiniest details in design and build quality, making the Pura 80 Ultra a standout smartphone overall. It represents a great alternative for people who want to avoid Google and Apple's ecosystems but would still appreciate a full-featured smartphone experience.
