By including a slightly different setup between the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple has created a bit of a dilemma here for photographers. Should they plump for the smaller device but be happy with 3x zoom, or should they pay a little bit more to get a 5x zoom (and other benefits like a larger screen). Again,’s hard to answer that without knowing what kind of shooter you are – some will simply prefer a 3x zoom, while others will crave that little bit of extra reach. Personally, I’d say that for many, the smaller screen and that sensible zoom is just about the perfect balance – but then I’m a fan of smaller phones in general. You may feel differently. What about when we compare it to Android models?

The Apple iPhone 15 Pro showed very similar behavior to the iPhone 14 Pro, but its battery experience was slightly below that of its predecessor and quite average when compared to other devices we have tested. The iPhone 15 Pro’s autonomy lasted a bit more than two days when it was used moderately, a decent result even if below average in our database. However, the device’s performance was less optimal when testing individual use cases, especially when gaming and listening to music, where the autonomy was poor. In terms of charging experience, the iPhone 15 Pro took 1 hour and 56 minutes to fully charge with a 30W charger, which was longer than average. The wireless charging time was also longer than average at 2 hours and 41 minutes. Moreover, the additional autonomy gained after a 5-minute charge was 3 hours and 17 minutes on average, which was lower than average in our database.

Well, I can only really answer from a photographic point of view – but the answer is yes, it is. But of course it is – if it wasn’t, then it wouldn’t need to exist. However, it’s very fair to say that if you already own an iPhone 14 Pro, the improvements are relatively marginal, and in some cases probably not significant enough to merit purchasing a brand new, very expensive phone for (though of course that’s up to the individual). Image quality is generally about the same as the iPhone 14 Pro. While that means it’s very good, excellent even, if you’re anticipating some massive jump in quality by upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro, you’re unlikely to see it. Most of the improvements come in the form of usability – such as the automatic portrait mode, the additional 1x lens options, and hardware changes such as the new Action button and the addition of a USB-C port for charging.

The Apple iPhone 15 Pro delivered an excellent performance in the DXOMARK Camera tests, achieving the same score as the flagship model iPhone 15 Pro Max and securing a position among the best in our ranking. With identical Quad-Bayer image sensors in the main camera, and chipsets, both still image and video quality were very similar between the 15 Pro and Pro Max. However, the two devices use different tele cameras, so it’s not much of a surprise that tele zoom performance was an exception. The Pro Max uses a 5x periscope design, the Pro comes with a more conventional 3x tele camera. While performance was very similar at close range tele, the Pro did better at medium range and the Pro Max was best for long-range tele shots. Overall, the 15 Pro scored slightly lower in the zoom category than the 15 Pro Max.

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are also powered by the new A17 Pro chip – the first mass-production 3nm chip. Apple claims dramatic performance improvements but I wasn't able to really experience or test it out. These phones feel fast, but that can be said for every new iPhone. We'll need to run more detailed tests to know for sure. As I said, these year's Pro iPhones are the biggest updates we've had in a long time. The changes, though not entirely ground-breaking, are significant. I'm not sure if you should upgrade if you have last year's phones – I'll need more time to mull over this – but you certainly should if you are using anything older.

The Apple iPhone 15 Pro is all about refinement. It takes the excellent iPhone 14 Pro and makes a number of tweaks here and there, making the best the company once offered better. There's plenty to love from the slimmer bezels, the switch to titanium, subtle upgrades in camera sensors, and performance improvements. It doesn't stand out on the page or in the flesh as much as the iPhone 15 Ultra, and the standard iPhone 15 is creeping in on its territory a little, especially with its move to Dynamic Island, but I suspect the 15 Pro will still be the iPhone many will turn to even if it's got some serious competition this year - and from its own team too.
