Overall, I’m just so pleased with this Chromebook. It looks great, feels great, is fun to use, and it outperforms any Chromebook I’ve ever used by a long shot. Sure, I’d like the screen to be a bit brighter, but the complete package on offer here is simply too good to get overly bothered by that. I’d reckon that if ASUS had put a bright panel in this and kept the $569 price tag, I’d be ready to label it the best overall Chromebook you can buy right now. It just gets so much right and it has me excited to see what future Tiger Lake Chromebooks bring to the table the rest of this year and very excited to be able to easily recommend picking up this CX5 if a bigger Chromebook is your thing.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of seeing Chromebooks as secondary computers that you’ll mostly use casually in the living room or while you’re out on the move. The Flip CX5 shows it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s great for browsing, speedy, versatile and ideal for study and hard work. Sure, we’d like to see a brighter screen and a slightly richer sound, but what you’ve got here is great for the money. If you’re interested or invested in Google’s web-based ecosystem and you want a bigger screen, this is the Chromebook to buy.

The Asus Flip CX5 Chromebook is a mixed bag. Its Tiger Lake processor ensures that things run fast and smooth for the vast majority of activities, although I did experience some odd problems with some games. Battery life is also good, with around ten hours from a single charge, plus the large screen is a nice size for working on documents, spreadsheets and streaming content. That being said, the screen is too dim to use outside on a bright day, plus the reflective nature of touchscreens can also cause problems in that environment. While the keyboard is decent, the small keys on the number pad make it feel too compromised to be useful, especially when it spoils the Chromebook ethos of simplicity by skewing the design off to one side. Worst of all is the rough edges around the edges of the keyboard plate, which feel like a weak point in the construction and could quickly become an issue. If you want power and a large screen, then the Flip CX5 delivers, but it does so with some curious caveats. One to try before you buy if you can.

The Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 is a robust Chromebook with a large screen and a very serviceable keyboard. However, the 250-nits screen will make outdoor viewing challenging, and the speakers are disappointing. The Core i3 model is affordable at £599.99 (inc. VAT), but the Core i5 specification, which costs over £700/$800, will come up against any number of fully-fledged Windows laptops, which are arguably more versatile and definitely more widespread in the workplace.

The Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 is a solid Chromebook by most measures. It has a great keyboard and touchpad, a large and attractive display, and feels speedy in everyday use. It’s brilliant for simple tasks, which is why budget Chromebooks dominate Amazon’s best-selling laptops. Unfortunately, the Flip CX5 enters the race dragging an anchor named ChromeOS. Take budget out of the equation, however, and it makes less sense. It’s not well suited to demanding tasks like video editing or 3D games. Android app support, which is meant to expand the Chromebook’s utility, is a disappointment. It’s superior to Android app support in Windows 11, as ChromeOS offers a wider selection, but it remains unreliable. The question to ask yourself is this: do you prefer ChromeOS? If so, the Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 is among the best Chromebooks you’ll find. If not, stick with a Windows or Mac laptop.

When it comes to budget laptops, price is paramount. Compromises are unavoidable, but a cheap laptop can strike a nice balance at the right price. The Asus Chromebook Flip C536 is a good example of such a device. I liked the 14-inch, 360-degree convertible 2-in-1 for its attractive price despite a few weaknesses. Asus has a larger model, the Chromebook Flip CX5, that’s similarly designed but offers a 15.6-inch display. Sometimes you just want more screen real estate, and so we decided to see if the larger model offered the same value. The Core i3 C536 model for $569 offers more value. The one exception would be someone who’s committed to the Chrome OS platform, but does need a larger screen and better performance — such as a developer. Because of the lack of 15-inch options, the Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 would be a serviceable option.

The elephant in the room to all of this is the CX5’s price: $828.99 is well outside of what most might consider to be Chromebook territory. But that projection is often, in part, based on the assumption that Chromebooks are cheap hardware, and I’d remind people that this price isn’t egregious when it comes to well-built Chromebooks — and I do think this one is well built. Consider the Pixelbook Go. A Pixelbook Go with identical specs to my test unit is $999. Google’s device is thinner and lighter than the CX5, but it also has a smaller screen, fewer ports, and an older processor, and it doesn’t flip around. It’s not clearly a better purchase for everyone — it’s certainly not $170 better for everyone. I think if you’re someone who prefers Chrome OS to Windows, and you know that the former will suit your needs, the CX5 isn’t egregiously priced. It’s a solid performer with a unique design — there are legitimate reasons to prefer it over a midrange Windows laptop, regardless of the operating system it’s running.

Look, I know I’ve just rattled off a bunch of good individual things about this Chromebook, but at the end of the day, there are others that could technically meet these same criteria. There’s one final step that has to take place, and that is the part of the experience we can’t put a technical measurement on. It’s the part that brings all the good stuff together and builds an experience, and the ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5400 gets that more right than most. Specs are needed for great Chromebooks, there’s no doubting that: but getting all that good stuff to come together to make a great experience takes something else – that immeasurable thing – that undefined quality that just makes you truly enjoy using something. The Flip CX5400 has that thing, and pairing it up to all the superlatives on offer in this Chromebook I have no issue in saying it is my go-to, favorite device in the office right now.
