Vaio has returned to laptops after a half-decade absence, and this return is a bit of a head-scratcher. It’s very light and pretty powerful, but the battery life is too short for a design this portable. And it costs a packet. If you want a “serious” portable laptop, Lenovo’s and Dell’s alternatives are better.

The SX14 is as attractive as any ultrabook on the market, both aesthetically and for its portability. Combine that sleek design with a gorgeous 4K display, fast performance and a comfortable keyboard, and the Vaio name has our attention once again. But it's the crazy assortment of ports on the SX14's tiny chassis that leaves us bewildered yet impressed.

VAIO’s return is welcome, and the SX14 has plenty to like; it’s good-looking and light, with a good screen and keyboard on the outside and decent components and connectivity throughout. However, rivals do have better screens, superior battery life and sometimes more computing power too – and the VAIO’s competition is always cheaper. This isn’t a bad machine, but it needs to be better.
