Lenovo ThinkPad E550 review – where budget and functionality go hand in hand

No wonder that last year’s Lenovo ThinkPad E540 was selling so well, but does its successor live up to the legacy? Well, in some terms yes, but in others – no. Lenovo kept the same minimalistic design signature with high-quality plastic for the construction. The keyboard remains almost perfect as usual and the trackpad and touchpad complete the pleasant user experience. Yes, it still lacks the quality panel, but it does offer good functionality for its price range and you have a bonus fingerprint reader, as most competitors don’t offer this option. Actually the E550 brings more to the table than we would have expected and does the job perfectly for what it’s made for.

The E550's build quality is fine, its battery life not terrible, and the Intel chip looks fast and frugal. But the screen is below par and - ultimately - this finger-drummingly slow laptop cannot be recommended for anyone that needs to get work done in a hurry.

The only thing that seems to be missing is an SSD. Even the fastest SSHD isn't as good as an all-flash storage device, and it would have meant even better performance, boot times and responsiveness. For many people, the potential trade-off in a smaller SSD storage capacity would be well worth it. Perhaps Lenovo is saving that upgrade for its pricier models. But aside from this it's hard to really criticise the E550. It ticks all the important boxes, doesn't cost the earth and is exceptionally well built. Definitely a contender for the best value laptop you can buy at this price.
