Reviews for the LG Wing
With the Wing model, LG takes a completely new look at smartphone operation. Instead of using a foldable OLED panel, the Korean manufacturer implements a second display below the main screen. Does this make sense, and is it a more robust alternative to a foldable smartphone such as the Galaxy Z Fold 2?

It's not for everyone, of course, but it does some cool stuff. Gimbal Mode is awesome for video recording, although it's a shame that it's limited to 1080p 30fps. And there are some practical uses for the dual screen. Hopefully, LG gets more apps to support it.

The LG Wing is a show-stopping, swiveling smartphone that will turn heads everywhere you go. The Wing isn’t the zippiest smartphone on the market, but I’d argue it’s the most innovative. If you’re seeking a dual-screen smartphone with industry-leading specs, consider the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, but keep in mind those better-performing internals will cost you a whopping $999 more.

The LG Wing reels you in with intuitive software experiences that make use of the unique dual-display approach. Unfortunately, you'll pay a high price for its middling performance, underwhelming battery life and average photo quality.

I’ll make this real simple: No, you shouldn’t go out and buy the Wing. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, even those who want to be Instagram influencers and YouTubers. I’m not even going to recommend it to the commuters and gig drivers out there. The LG Wing is purely a sweet concept phone that LG decided to actually make, and at $1K, you can do better. If you really want a crazy design, I’d have you wait for LG’s next Explorer device, suggested to feature some type of rollable display. That looks much more useful in terms of everyday usage.

I thought having the main display swivel to reveal a smaller display might be more of a novelty than anything else, but I have been proven wrong. I use the LG Wing 5G in Basic Mode most of the time, like I’d use any other smartphone. But when I want to multi-task, it is so convenient to have the smaller second display available in Swivel Mode to enhance and enrich my experience. The LG Wing snuck up on me; I didn’t expect to enjoy using it as much as I do, but that is exactly what happened.

The LG Wing is a first-try at an entirely new form factor for modern smartphones. It needs some work to appeal beyond the early adopter crowd, but it's impossible to deny that LG is on to something here. In other words, we're anxiously awaiting the LG Wing 2.

The LG Wing’s rotating display is a marvel of engineering and an incredibly fun novelty, the kind of design innovation that’s exciting to see in a world where most smartphone designs are just variations on the same identical black slabs. But being new and interesting doesn’t mean that something is good, and without better software support or a lower price tag, it’s hard to recommend the Wing for anyone but the most jaded smartphone owners.

The LG Wing may seem strange at first blush, but it reels you in with intuitive software experiences that make use of the unique dual-display approach, as well as a handy gimbal camera for video. However, we'll have to conduct additional testing before we can give it our recommendation.

The LG Wing is just the kind of phone I’d feature on an episode of my “When Phones Were Fun” throwback series … if it hadn’t just debuted this month! Yes, while the Wing mimics the form factor of 2008’s VX9400, it’s very much a product of 2020, from its 5G chipset to its mammoth OLED displays to its surprisingly innovative Swivel Camera mode. In fact, reviewing the LG Wing was the most fun I’ve had reviewing an LG product since I started this channel – and not just because it involved wine tasting, either!

For all we know, the Wing form factor might be a one-off thing. And again, that's not just us speculating, since the last thing we learned regarding the future of the Explorer Project was a teaser for what seems to be a slide-out display phone design. Simply put - for all the bold, early-bird tech explorers out there, the LG Wing is definitely worth your love and time, for all the rest of us - waiting to see where LG's explorations ultimately land them is by far the best choice for now.

But it’s impossible for its unique swivel feature to hide, even when using the phone normally, thanks to the phone’s heavy weight and thickness. Its quirkiness is an acquired taste, and only enthusiasts or the curious should buy one.

The LG Wing is definitely… out there. A strange and kind of wacky device — LG has again shown that it doesn’t shy away from experimenting. The Wing looks like a phone that someone just came up with during a brainstorming session, and it was accidentally greenlit.

The LG Wing is a fun example of how to pack dual-screen functionality into a phone that's only slightly larger than your average big (big) phone. But LG's Android software, and the phone's 60Hz refresh rate, make the experience less fluid and intuitive than it should be. And the software gimbal feature, with its poor low-light capabilities, seems like a missed opportunity.

When it comes to offering more screen real estate on a smartphone, manufacturers have two options: either go with a flexible display à la Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, or attach a secondary screen like the LG Velvet. While the latter is obviously the easier (and cheaper) option, both implementations have a common problem: multi-tasking only works well when both apps are in portrait orientation, due to the design of most apps.

These days, phones are either rectangular slabs with one straight screen or, in the case of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or Motorola Razr 5G, they're slabs with flexible screens that open up. But the LG Wing is neither. Instead, it's a phone with two screens, one of which swivels on top of the other.

A phone like the LG Wing 5G is tough to judge from the little time we’ve had with it so far, especially if some of our misgivings are fixed in the final build. What’s equally unclear is just how useful the extra screen real estate is, especially with the unique applications of the T-shaped display layout when swiveled open.

Huge thanks to LG for sponsoring this video. The LG Wing might just be the craziest phone of 2020. Its definitely one of the most unique smartphones of the year. The screen of the new LG Wing can swivel up into a 'T' shape. Revealing a smaller square screen hidden below.

Unfortunately, LG has not yet shared details about release plans for the LG Wing. Neither do we know an exact price. Word on the street says it’ll be in the ballpark of $1,000. Sounds like a fair price, considering the crazy concept and the super-stable camera, right?

Turns out the swiveling LG Wing phone, which was leaked ahead of its announcement in a YouTube video, is real and as wacky as the rumors purported it to be. Unveiled at a virtual presser earlier this month, the 5G phone has two screens, one of which swivels on top of the other to form a T-shape design. In the US it will be available first on Verizon, then AT&T in the fall and T-Mobile.

Outside of expensive foldables, phone design has stagnated in the last few years, with most phones these days being slight variations on the edge-to-edge glass rectangle. The LG Wing 5G is a bold exception: a phone with a front screen that swivels horizontally and upward to reveal a smaller display underneath, providing more screen real estate in a device that you can use one-handed.

The LG Wing is an interesting addition to the selection of truly weird devices we’ve recently had our hands on. The foldable and dual-screen device categories are growing quickly, and it’s great to see more companies imagining how we’ll interact with different form factors in the future.

The LG Wing is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset paired with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB internal memory. It comes with an under-display fingerprint sensor and a motorised pop-up 32-megapixel front-facing camera. The smartphone is powered by a 4,000 mAh battery which supports Quick Charge 4.0+ fast-charging technology as well as wireless charging. Shipments are expected to hit retailers next month.
