First impressions of the Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max in "Splendid Gold" are really strong. The double-ring design is back, serving as the wireless charging coil, and the all-metal chassis feels dense and premium. Visually, the bezels are razor-thin thanks to the 2.5D flat screen design. There is even a tiny, hidden "MATE" engraving on the camera ring that you can only see with a macro lens—the attention to detail is wild. Then there is the Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design. The "Reserved Purple" colorway combined with the high-gloss titanium frame makes it feel more like jewelry than a phone.

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max is finally here, and it is doing something we haven't seen in the flagship space for years—bringing back the premium all-metal unibody design. But this phone isn't just playing on nostalgia. With the new Kirin 9030 Pro chip and a price tag that is actually lower than the previous generation, Huawei is making a serious statement in the high-end market. Design-wise, this is easily one of the most unique phones of 2025. The switch to the Xuanwu all-metal architecture combined with straight edges gives it a durability and feel that glass phones just can't match. On the front, the new "Ultra-Transparent" dual-layer OLED display is stunning, hitting over 1800 nits of peak brightness while consuming less power.

EN→zh-CNThe more appropriate question is, "Could you buy it?" The phone is a decent full-fledged flagship with a great screen, good camera system, stellar battery life and last but not least - attractive design. Granted, the Kirin 9030 is far from the industry leaders when it comes to synthetic benchmarks, but the phone performs flawlessly in normal day-to-day activities. The phone starts at around $1000 (depending on the country and the conversion rate) but getting it in Europe or North America can be a tall order. Despite the great flagship package, the Mate 80 Pro remains a peculiarity in most regions of the world.

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro is here, and to be honest, it seems to be an iterative update over the Mate 70 Pro Plus I tested barely a year ago. However, the phone still has an excellent super fast camera system and a great in-hand feel. Battery life and display are also top notch. The only downsides are the silicon not being bleeding edge, and software quirks.

6.90:
