The only good reason to buy the BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition is if you've been dying for an Ubuntu tablet and don't want to install the operating system yourself. For $312, you're getting an underpowered tablet with an operating system that you can install on a plethora of other devices for free.

Sadly, it is still seemingly at a beta level, despite being marketed in a commercial product. It is a productivity-oriented device that is nigh impossible to use productively because of its sandbox implementation. And the device might initially turn off Linux enthusiasts because of its locked down file system, which also prevents the kind of ingenuity and creativity that has made a hundred or so different Linux apps proliferate.

When it comes to hardware, the bq Aquaris M10 can perhaps be best described as something that "Just Works". That can be taken both ways. On the one hand, it has a no fuss approach to features, with hardware that performs decently for the price you are paying for it. On the other hand, it also means that, as far as hardware and design is concerned, the tablet is unexciting and unassuming. Depending on your particular inclination, that might very well be your cup of tea.

The BQ Aquaris M10 is very a much work in progress. Sure, it might find a place in the hearts of Ubuntu diehards, but the buggy and seemingly unfinished software means it's nowhere near consumer ready just yet. Saying that, it's certainly an intriguing piece of kit, and the software could prove a viable alternative to Windows 10 once Canonical gets convergence nailed.

The above may make it sound like it’s all doom and gloom for the Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition, but this isn’t the case. Sure, the tablet isn’t ready for consumers, but that’s because it’s a work-in-progress. In the world of open source, early releases are often buggy and finicky. In fact, even the early versions of Android, which had Google bucks behind it, were pretty terrible.
