The test of its predecessor or rather its little brother, Prestigio MultiPad 7.0 Prime Duo, convinced us: Despite the budget price of just 150 Euros (~$195), the 7-inch tablet was not a budget product; on the contrary, it proved to be a well-made product. The MultiPad 7.0 especially convinced us by its light weight, its good quality chassis and processing as well as through its outstanding IPS display. However, there were also deficiencies: The MultiPad 7.0 showed clearly shorter battery life than comparable tablets and generated more heat during operation.
With the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G, Prestigio has now sent another Tablet PC through our benchmarks and increased the size significantly with this new addition. Instead of 7 inches, the display is now 10.1 inches and utilizes an MVA panel. However, the operating system (Android 4.0) and the similarly low price remained the same: Although the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G costs only 280 Euros (~$365), it should be able to compete with the much more expensive 10.1-inch rivals by combining good performance and features.
Comparing the test candidate with similarly equipped 10-inch tablets, the Archos 97 Titanium HD, Bullman TAB 9 AD Revolution and Trekstor Surftab Ventos 9.7 are within the same price range and utilize the same SoC, but don't come with a 3G/UMTS modem. On the other hand, 10.1-inch rivals such as the Google Nexus 10, Medion Lifetab S9714 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 cost much more.
For the system on chip, the Prestigio MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G uses the dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 based Rockchip RK3066, which runs at a 1.6 GHz clock frequency and is combined with the Mali-400 MP4 graphics processor. The manufacturer offers two versions of the Android tablets. On the one hand, we have the 3G version as our review unit, which contains a 3G/HSDPA modem and on the other hand we have the 230 Euros (~$300) version, which is about 50 Euros (~$65) cheaper and comes without 3G modem.

Case
With its black, two centimetres wide frame and the dark-grey back, the Prestigio MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G looks rather inconspicuous , which can also be described as timeless design. With a weight of 680 gram and a height of 10.5 millimetres, the Prestigio isn't considered one of the lightest and thinnest 10.1 tablets. Other tablets, such as the Google Nexus 10 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 are thinner (in each case 8.9 mm), but in the test, the somewhat thicker housing of the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G wasn't of concern at any time. In addition, our test candidate is neither too large or small, but falls within normal ranges of the 10 inch class with dimensions of 10.5 x 257 x 175 millimetres (H x W x D). Configuration
The MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G incorporates a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 Rockchip RK3066, which is clocked at 1.6 GHz and accompanied by 1 GB RAM as well as 16 GB of internal memory. Using an SD card slot for microSD and microSDHC cards, the tablet can be expanded further by up to 32 GB storage space. The supplied USB-OTG cable (on-the-Go) works fairly smoothly in the test with many USB pens, external hard disks and even mice and keyboards. A few incompatibilities still exist, as the test revealed occasional issues with the interaction between the tablet and external hardware. For example, the English keyboard layout was activated by default whenever a keyboard was connected. On another occasion, the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G was not able to work with a 2.5-inch Samsung HM400LI (400GB) hard drive housed in a USB 2.0 casing.
When removing the storage media, to avoid subsequent compatibility issues when the USB devices are connected to the PC or MAC, remove the storage media correctly using the Android settings (the corresponding menu option is called "Remove SD card").

Software
The MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G uses the slightly dated Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich as an operating system. Contrary to its 7-inch equivalent, the Multi-PAD 7.0 Prime Duo, the 10.1 version boots significantly faster and requires (instead of 1 minute) approximately 25 seconds to boot into the OS completely. The manufacturer has refrained from using a customized skin and uses the ICS standard interface instead. Prestigio only adds a few customizations via preinstalled apps such as the Prestigio eReader, Angry Birds or the cloud software Sugar Sync, which provides 5GB of cloud storage space.

In the wireless communication field, the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G is able to demonstrate its strengths. In case one is wondering where Prestigio had to cut corners in order to arrive at the bargain price of 280 Euros (~$365), the answer would be the camera. The MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G houses a very simple camera on both the front and the back with a 2 MP resolution (1600x1200 pixels) each. The image quality is poor - photos taken lose many details and seem out of focus even when using a tripod and under good lighting conditions. Similarly, videos are also a major weakness: Both cameras record with a resolution of 640x480 pixels and a stuttering 9 pictures per second.

Input Devices
When it comes to ultra-mobile devices, such as a tablet PC, the screen represents the main control element and has to convince accordingly. The capacitive MVA Touchscreen of the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G offers a resolution of 1280x800 pixels and belongs to the ranks of tablets not offering a full HD resolution, but other than that there are no further issues with the screen. Due to the glass surface of the test candidate, input is literally smooth. The tablet recognizes all commands quickly and precisely, even scrolling through websites or lists happens immediately and without lags. Only when rotating the screen, it will cause a slight delay of about one second, but altogether the orientation functions very reliably.
The MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G provides a virtual keyboard with QUERTZ layout for input, which sits in the lower half (horizontal orientation of the display) or in the lower quarter (vertical orientation) of the screen. The keys are sufficiently large, react with nearly no delay and allow for quick input after some familiarization, similar to a "real" keyboard. In case this isn't good enough, one can connect a USB mouse or a USB keyboard to the tablet. However, there is only the option of using an English keyboard layout.

Display
The Prestigio MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G integrates a glossy 10.1-inch display with a native resolution of 1280x800 pixels in 16:10 widescreen format. These specifications represent the class standard and can be found in the Lenovo IdeaTab S2110A and the Medion Lifetab S9714. However there is an important difference: While the mentioned Lenovo and Medion tablets as well as the most current devices utilize IPS panels, the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G uses an MVA panel which is relatively unusual for a tablet. In contrast to IPS displays the MVA screens carry a somewhat higher response time, however we couldn't detect any delays even during quick screen changes, such as when running games.

Subjectively, we are actually quite content with the screen, since it represents contents clearly and with realistic colors. Under extreme viewing angles, the colors fade noticeably, however.
As the measured values prove, the display is certainly not one of the strengths of the MultiPad Ultimate 3G. Higher contrasts and deeper black levels are delivered by 10.1-inch rivals, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (Brightness 363.3 cd/m ², contrast 804:1) and even the 7-inch Prestigio MultiPad 7.0 Prime Duo (Brightness 300.3 cd/m ², contrast 1017:1).

We have looked at tablets with the same SoC structure, such as the Archos 97 Titanium HD, the Bullman TAB 9 AD Revolution and the Trekstor Surftab Ventos 9.7. The comparison becomes complete with well-known 10-inch tablets, such as the Apple iPad 4, Google Nexus 10, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 as well as the Prestigio cousin MultiPad 7.0 Prime Duo with 7-inch screen.
AnTuTu v3 revealed slight weaknesses with the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G, because the Archos 97 Titanium HD is 37% faster, while the Google Nexus 10 races far ahead. For the Androbench benchmark, data transmission rates were compared. Ignoring the synthetic benchmarks and looking only at browser performance, the Prestigio MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G shows good performance. During Browsermark 2.0 the test candidate exceeds the Archos 97 Titanium HD by 26%; however, it falls behind by the same amount during the Google V8 Ver. 7 test. The Sunspider 0.9.1 benchmark allows the tablet to take the pole position and even triumphs over other performance titans, such as the Google Nexus 10.

Benchmarks, such as AnTuTu and NenaMark2, show that the gaming performance of the Prestigio MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G is average, but not necessarily bad. Large performance leaps are not possible however and more demanding titles would see our test candidate reaching its limits. Another gaming benchmark, GLBench 2.5, was unable to run on the Prestigio, neither in on-screen nor in off-screen mode.

Gaming
The MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3D incorporates an Arm SoC Rockchip RK3066, which is partnered with a Mali-400 MP4 for gaming purposes; it is an OpenGL ES 2.0 capable graphic chip with four cores. The combined CPU and GPU performance is enough for simple games like Angry Birds as well as more demanding titles, for example the 3D shooter ShadowGun and Zombiewood or the racing simulation Raging Thunder. However, some titles like GT Racing: Engine Academy Free+ and Brothers in Arms 2 Free+, which refused to run on the Prestigio MultiPad 7.0 Duo, were also unable to launch on the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G.

During operation, the Prestigio 10.1 Ultimate 3G remained fairly cool. Only under peak load, the front of the tablet started to heat up to a maximum of 33.3 Celsius (~91.4 degrees Fahrenheit), while the average temperature was also fairly moderate at 29.6 degrees Celsius (~85.28 degrees Fahrenheit). The back of the Prestigio does not even become lukewarm - we measured on average 27.4 degrees Celsius (~81.32 degrees Fahrenheit).
Maximum load and idle state only carry a small temperature difference. In idle state measurements have been taken over 9 points at 29.2 degrees Celsius (front) (~84.56 degrees Fahrenheit) and 27.3 degrees Celsius (back) (~81.14 degrees Fahrenheit). Overall, the temperature development is absolutely not of concern - there is no risk of overheating for the electronic components. Even the supplied power adapter barely heats up.

Speakers
On the back of the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G there are two small loudspeakers to the left and right, which deliver acceptable sound. When turning the display, the sound ends up coming only from one direction, which causes the weak stereo effect to fade even more. As with many other tablets, the sound membranes of the Prestigio MultiPad are only useful for background music. The volume can be increased to a fairly high level, but the sound characteristics remain shallow and dull - trebles dominate, the middle and basses are non-existent. Headphones are highly recommended and are worth it, because the 3.5 mm headphone jack offers good sound when coupled with high-quality earphones or headsets.

The lithium-polymer battery with 6,400 mAh is integrated within the MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G and cannot be removed without taking the tablet apart. The measurements show that the Prestigio tablet is quite wasteful with its available capacity. In idle state the consumption is around 8.9 Watts and under full load it goes up to a maximum of 10.9 Watts. Both values lie above the average of tablets of comparable size and features, but are still within acceptable ranges. However, a lot of energy is wasted in standby mode (2.3 Watts).

Battery life
The above average power consumption of the Prestigio MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G is reflected in a relatively short battery life. According to manufacturer specification, the tablet is able to playback videos for up to 6.5 hours, with audio playback reaching up to 36 hours and 120 hours in standby mode. In the test, the Prestigio achieves the minimum goal of 6.5 hours battery life, however this only occurs under the most favorable conditions. In idle mode with activated Wi-Fi and minimum brightness, the Prestigio MultiPad 10.1 Ultimate 3G shuts itself down after 7 hours and 46 minutes in the Reader’s test.
In the test scenario "Browsing via Wi-FI (Wi-Fi switched on, reduced display brightness to 150 cd/m ²), the tablet is only able to achieve 4 hours and 46 minutes and under full load of CPU and GPU, switched on Wi-Fi and maximum display brightness, it already gives up after 3 hours and 50 minutes.

Verdict
The Prestigio 10.1 Ultimate 3G is not a "budget" tablet, even if it appears fairly inexpensive with its 280 Euros (~$365) price label. The test candidate scores with its sturdy chassis, which wouldn't win a design award, but convinces with its easily accessible and sensibly arranged interfaces and a durable glass front . However, other 10.1-inch rivals can offer the same, such as the Archos 97 Titanium HD, the Bullman TAB 9 AD Revolution and the Trekstor Surftab Ventos 9.7 and are even available at a lower price.
What makes the Prestigio 10.1 Ultimate 3G better or at least different? On the one hand, there is the integrated 3G/UMTS modem and moreover it enables full access to Google Play - the first feature is usually reserved for more expensive tablets, while the Google Store cannot be accessed from just any device, such as in the case of the Trekstor Surftab Ventos 9.7. In addition, there are further strengths, such as the smooth operation, a quick Android 4.0.4 as well as a consistent low operating temperature and good gaming capabilities, which also caters for more demanding titles.
However, we weren't impressed by the mediocre display, which delivers good quality only under optimal lighting conditions, but delivers contrast, viewing angles and brightness levels which are below average. Especially during outdoor usage, the user has to face big challenges, because the low brightness combined with a highly glossy surface becomes noticeably annoying. The Prestigio 10.1 Ultimate 3G is also criticized for its bad cameras and the poor stereo sound. Although not overwhelming, the battery life is still acceptable.
So after all is it still a budget tablet? No, because the tablet can actually do everything one can expect from a tablet. However, one shouldn't just blindly buy the Prestigio 10.1 Ultimate 3G, because the pros and cons are about on the same level. It is important to evaluate which features are particularly required and which ones are possibly not needed.
