Amazon Fire HD 7 (2014) Tablet Review

EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
For its price point of $140, it’s hard to go wrong with Amazon’s Fire HD 7 – as long as you know what you’re getting into. This is the first Amazon tablet I’ve been able to put some serious time into, and having had owned a bunch of other Android tablets in the past, I’d be fibbing if I said there wasn’t a big learning-curve. One of the most important bullet points buyers need to bear in mind is that Google’s Play Store is not included on Amazon’s tablets. For some, that might not matter, but for me, it’d be a deal-breaker if this was meant to be a primary tablet. But, I’m someone who’s tied into Google’s ecosystem tight.

Amazon Fire HD 7 review: the 2014 tablet is overpriced compared to rivals

While it's relatively easy to recommend the HD 6 at £79 or £99, it's significantly harder to like the HD 7 at £119 or £139. For £129, Tesco's larger Hudl 2 is a much better deal, even if you're buying it for your kids.

Amazon Fire HD 7 review
Source: Pocket Lint
EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
At £119 for the ad-supported 8GB model (if you don't want adverts then you need to pay an extra £10), the Amazon Fire HD 7 might be affordable but struggles against a Tesco 16GB tablet that's faster, has a higher resolution screen and the full Android experience for just £10 more. Even without ads, the 8GB Amazon model at the same price as the Tesco model pales in comparison. If you would rather keep things simple, it's worth giving Amazon's latest slate a try. There's a sense of Amazon resting on its laurels, but what's worked well before continues to do so now. If only it was a little more affordable given the current competition - but with that in mind the 6-inch Amazon Fire HD 6, priced at £79, is perhaps the better option if you're looking for a bargain.

Amazon Fire HD 6 is a really good value tablet. The Amazon Fire HD 7 isn't. Amazon Fire HD 6 and Amazon Fire HD 7 review

It isn't perfect, but the HD 6 is really good value. Performance is well above the level you'd expect at this price, as is the quality of the screen. Some might find the 6in screen too small, though, so it's worth trying to track one down before buying. It isn't nearly as easy to recommend the HD 7. With both tablets you really need to spend the extra £20 and get 16GB of storage, but that puts the HD 7 in direct competition with 'proper' Android tablets such as the Hudl 2.

Sporting a vivid display, a zippy processor and access to a wealth of Amazon content, the Amazon Fire HD 7 is one of the better tablets you can get for under $150. The slate's FreeTime parental controls make it the perfect gadget to share with your little one, and its long battery life allows the whole family to get plenty of use out of the tablet on a single charge.
