The Fire HD 6 is perfect for someone who has never bought a tablet because they cost too much. Ditto for families that want an extra slate floating around for when the iPad is already taken, or someone looking for a good stocking stuffer for the holidays. And again, it isn't a bad e-reader alternative either.

For those looking to get a tablet for very little, it is hard to top the value that the Fire HD 6 has to offer. Sure, it has to compromise on features, particularly storage space on the device and running time but the design offers a great display and build quality for under $100. And those looking to get one for the kids should really consider the $149 kids version simply for the two year worry-free warranty.

It isn't perfect, but the HD 6 is really good value. Performance is well above the level you'd expect at this price, as is the quality of the screen. Some might find the 6in screen too small, though, so it's worth trying to track one down before buying. It isn't nearly as easy to recommend the HD 7. With both tablets you really need to spend the extra £20 and get 16GB of storage, but that puts the HD 7 in direct competition with 'proper' Android tablets such as the Hudl 2.

Heralding a new age of good budget tablets, the Amazon Fire HD 6 boasts a great mix of features, design and performance for just $99. It is a bit smaller than the $150 ASUS MeMO Pad 7 and $130 Acer Iconia One 7 but offers better battery life and a brighter screen with an easy-to-use interface. All that's good, but it's the detailed parental controls that make the Fire HD 6 a must-have tablet.
