Instead of the reverse-folding prototype we got a peek of a few years ago, the Mi Mix Fold looks remarkably like the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It packs in Xiaomi's premium camera tech, with a 108mp main camera, and most notably, a "liquid lens" 8MP camera. Xiaomi is claiming this uses a fluid-filled lens to shift between a telephoto and macro shooter. Impressive if true, though we'll want to test it. The Mi Mix Fold is debuting at 9,999 yuan, around $1,500, a good deal cheaper than the folding options from other companies, though you may have trouble finding one in the USA.

Unlike the screen’s well-rendered colors in low light and indoors, however, the device had trouble keeping colors looking natural in bright sunlight conditions because its High Brightness Mode was making colors look flat. Xiaomi usually offers close to excellent video recording experience on its flagship smartphones, and it's beyond us what happened for this Mix Fold 2. So, the Mix Fold 2 is a great foldable device and a good smartphone. We are sure it will find fans across China as it is a country where sometimes software means more than hardware, and MIUI has the upper hand. It is not the best foldable, that's for sure, but it is the thinnest one. And our verdict is quite simple - if you like it, you buy it as it's a worthy device. If its imperfections bother you - look elsewhere. But if you don't live in China, or nearby, we can't in good conscience recommend gray importing it - not like we did the Ultra models. Foldables break a lot more often than regular phones. And if this Mix Fold 2 does crack, you will end up with one fancy paperweight with nowhere to service it.

Finally, should you buy the Mix Fold 2? If this phone was sold globally and was available in your market, I’d say a definitive yes. But because most readers will have to import, this becomes much trickier. Importing will add at least a couple hundred dollars to the $1,300-ish retail price, and you won’t get any warranty, not to mention the game of chance you will play getting full network coverage in your region due to missing bands. In that situation, most buyers are better off getting the Z Fold 4 or hoping Xiaomi launches this globally later. With that said, however, there are phone enthusiasts who would import this in a heartbeat. A former colleague at XDA imported one. I know two people in Singapore who have. And I would import this too if Xiaomi hadn’t given me access to a review device. But we are a very niche group: foldable enthusiasts. Even if most of you reading this will not buy this device, it’s still great that the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 exists because it shows consumers what is possible. Maybe Samsung can get away with its thicker design for another year due to a lack of competition globally.

With an overall score of 130, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 delivered a good performance in the DXOMARK Audio tests and showed very noticeable improvements over its predecessor, the Mix Fold 2. The Mix Fold 3 especially shone as a recording device, thanks to a very pleasant timbre and very effective wind noise reduction. Only when recording loud events, such as concerts, did the Xiaomi show some weaknesses. Overall recording results were best with the main camera, but the front camera and memo app were almost on the same level. Playback was not quite on the same high level as the recording results but still decent. Playback quality was very good at high volumes, with very good bass and treble rendition as well as dynamics, but unfortunately the quality dropped at nominal and soft volume levels.

The Mix Fold 3 is another step in the right direction for the Xiaomi foldable lineup, if not quite as dramatic as the transition from the first to the second generation. That said, some things haven't been addressed yet, like the waterproofing, less than ideal thermals, lackluster video capabilities and software that's not as useful as it could be. The move from an autofocusing ultrawide to a fixed focus one also perplexes us. However, this third generation does bring meaningful upgrades. We're fans of longer reach and we very much appreciate the 5x telephoto, and it's nice that there's a 3.2x unit to bridge the gap too - there haven't been such zoom-focused foldables lately. Tying nicely with the enhanced imaging setup is the new hinge design that adds another layer of usefulness to the form factor.
